A/N: I got this idea from a fanficiton called Mikat by AshuraTepes It's good, you should check it out if you like this.
"Mika, hurry up! Because of you and your 'I need coffee' we're going to be late! I refuse to get detention because of you again!" I glanced up at Yuu from my cup of coffee. He was at the corner, and I was about 10 feet behind him.
"I know, I know, gimme a-" I was cut off by a scene I never thought I'd see. Yuu hadn't looked both ways, but we didn't exactly need to. Most of the time. Yuu was in the the middle of the street. A car had seen him too late. I reached out to him, but whatever I did, I would never make it. I had failed to tell him I loved him. Now he would never know, and I would never forgive myself for failing to protect him.
"Yuu-chan!!!!!!!" A sickening crunch.
~
I woke with a jolt from that dream. I hated it. I hated that I was the cause of Yuu's death. I hated myself since it happened, really.
I rolled out of the bed. Time to face the reality I'd made for myself. One I'd never wanted to become a reality. Life without Yuu. I cringed.
Do you forgive me for what I did, Yuu-chan? I thought, looking at the ceiling.
I made it a point to 'speak' to him daily. It helped me a little, but really, I just wanted him to be happy and safe, wherever he was.
Ten minutes later, I was dressed and walking down that same street it happened. I hadn't drank coffee since the morning he died. It was a nice morning, that. I guess as good a last day as any, if you ask me.
I was just about to turn the corner when I saw a dog, a black dog, not very big, walking towards me. I immediately dropped down on a knee, holding out my hand to it. It stopped.
"Come on boy, here." I said, shaking my hand ever so slightly to let it know it was okay. It continued on, sniffing, it walked on. It jumped, putting it's two front paws on my chest, almost like a hug. I might be slightly delusional, but I swear it was smiling that smile he did, not that long ago.
I had been going to meet Yuu's friends today for lunch, but this dog didn't have any tags on it, as I discovered when it had been on my chest. They would understand my want to take this dog home. Now, it was walking besides me, occasionally going ahead to sniff something, but it always came back.
As it walked, the sun kept catching it's eyes. They were a nice green color, eerily reminiscent of Yuu.
"What's your name?" I asked it, not expecting it to answer. It did, but with an excited sounding woof, before it ran up ahead to my house. I don't know how it knew it was my house, but maybe it followed my scent? I don't know.
I walked around it to get to my door, and almost tripped over it because it was moving around so much. It reminded me so much of Yuu, but I guess that was good. The dog made me both sad and happy at the same time. Maybe with it, I can get past the pain of losing him.
As soon as I opened the door just enough so it could get in, it rushed past me. I huffed. I'm going to have to set some ground rules for this dog. It looked pretty clean, so I guess it didn't need a bath, but I'd probably have to take it to the vet, get it's injections, and adopting papers and all that.
I walked into my living room, seeing a black streak down the hallway. Dang, it was all over, wasn't it? I saw it go into all the rooms, pause for a moment looking around, before running right into the next one. I watched him repeat this for all the rooms down the hallway.
My phone rang as he went back into the living room. It laid down, putting it's head on it's paws, watching me wierdly. Reminding me of all those looks Yuu used to send me when he wanted me to do something on a dare. I glared at it as I responded.
"Mika, where are you!" Shinoa's voice rang out of the phone. At her voice, the dog's ears came up ever so slightly. Was it going to pay attention to the conversation?
"Ummm, I found a stray dog and took it home." I said bluntly. Shinoa made a sound that sounded like she was fist pumping the air.
"Okay, Mika, just don't do anything stupid, okay?" Shinoa stated before hanging up. I sighed. Yes, I'd tried to kill myself once. I had been drunk though, so it wasn't probably going to happen again.
I went over to sit on the couch, turning on the TV. I looked over at the dog, the dog looked over at me, it's eyes asking a question. I sighed, nodding. It raced up to my lap, settling there easily.
After a minute, I started rubbing my hands across the fur on it's back. I felt it relax more at my touch. I smiled. At least on thing trusts me.
At some point I must have fallen asleep, because then;
"Mika! Mika! Wake up, I don't get that much time with you, after all!" I heard it. Yuu's voice.
I opened my eyes to Yuu standing next to me in a t-shirt and jeans. I stood up.
"Yuu-chan?" I asked, my voice on the verge of tears.
"No, Mika, I'm Johnny Depp." He replied in a deadpan. Nope that was most definitely him. He can definitely be a smart ass sometimes. I laughed.
"Yes, it's me, Mika, who else would it be?" Yuu said after I laughed.
"I missed you so much." I told him. He nodded, casting his face downwards.
"Not for long." He said cryptically, and then he seemed to fade away like smoke.
I blinked, and I realized I was still on the couch. The TV was turned off, and the dog I'd brought home was sleeping calmly next to me.
I sat up, and the dog's eyes flew open. It barked. It sounded angry that I'd moved it's soft meat pillow. I laughed at it.
"So........dinner?" I said, glancing at the clock.
The Dog looked straight at me, giving me a droll stare.
It seemed to be saying, 'No dumbass, of course not. It's not like I have to eat anything.'
I rolled my eyes. I was already beginning to enjoy The Dog's company. But what to name him?
