"Yuuichiro Amane, get your ass down here this instant." This particular voice had just interrupted his dream. A really good dream too. And now Yuu couldn't remember what it had been about.
Damn it.
"Fine." He huffed, swinging his legs over the side of the bed. He brushed his teeth, put on his clothes, and went down to breakfast like he did every morning.
This morning, however, was different. He felt like crap. He could barely keep his eyes open. This was weird because he hadn't even pulled an all-nighter.
He basically stumbled into the kitchen like a zombie. Shinoa, technically his step-aunt, but was really more of a sister, was sitting at the table blowing on a cup of tea, her smoky lavender hair already done in it's usual braid.
"Are you practicing for being a zombie for Halloween or something?" She asked, her single streak of blonde falling forward, brushing it back, she shook her head. "No, that wouldn't fit you, Yuu-san." She answered her own question.
"Plus Halloween was two months ago so......" Yuu mumbled under his breath. Shinoa pretended not to hear him.
"Do you think today's the day for you, Yuu-san." Shinoa whispered after an awkward pause between them. Yuu turned to look at her from where he was pulling a bowl out of the kitchen cabinet.
"I doubt it." Yuu answered shortly. " Not all of us can meet ours as soon as you did." Yuu said, in a slightly softer tone. She nodded. She'd met her soul mate, Mitsuba, two years ago. The rest of that morning they didn't talk.
Yuu walked to school in silence. He struggled to stay awake all day. In his last class, it hit him as to why. He was dying slowly.
If you didn't meet the one in a certain period of time, you died, a slow agonizing death. Most people never got close to this point. But it was just Yuu's luck to be dying, and he was certain he would never meet them now. He was certain he'd die all alone. Except for Shinoa, Guren, and Shinya, of course. But they would never be able to save him now.
You knew when because you both got a streak of the other's hair color when you called their name and they called yours in return.
He barely noticed when the bell rang, signaling school was over. He was still staring straight ahead. Shinoa had to clap her hands on the desk to get his attention.
He finally focused on her eyes. He felt so guilty. He would leave her, just like her sister did, and he wouldn't be able to do anything about it. He would leave Guren, who's been left too many times to count, and Shinya, who's probably the only person that gives a damn if he eats his whole plate of food at dinner. A tear appeared on the corner of his eye. He blinked it away. He'd promised himself he would never cry again.
"Are you okay, Yuu-san?" She asked ever so softly. He nodded.
"Yeah. Don't worry about it." And with that, Yuu stood up and left the room. Not noticing the blonde boy staring after him.

Yuu walked to the train station. He needed to visit someone he hadn't seen in a long time, and thank her. He was on the platform with a few other kids from his school, and a really pretty blond boy that had arrived on the platform a few short minutes after him.
The boy was dressed in his school uniform, the one his year wore. Yuu had never seen this particular blond. No surprise. Yuu didn't really look at anybody in school, and didn't talk to anybody except when required. They didn't really understand him. Never had, nor did they make any effort to. It pissed Yuu off to no end, but there was nothing he could do about it. All his attempts to make friends in the past had been unsuccessful at best, mortifying at worst.
Yuu looked up, trying to find the expected arrival time of the train. Looking around for a moment, he found it, just as another bout of pain wracked his body.
At the same he did, the blonde boy started coughing violently, a look of pure pain across his face. It ended after a moment, and they both dealt with it in their own ways. Yuu wrapped his arms around his body, hugging himself to try and retain some warmth. 5 minutes until the train comes. He could do this.
The train came 5 agonizingly slow minutes later. It was so cramped already that only two seats were available. He took the right one, and the blonde took the left one a minute later. We both started coughing again as the train started moving. After few moments it stopped. Yuu could tell the blonde was looking at him over his shoulder.
"Hello, I'm Mikaela." The blonde said after what looked like a moment of warring with himself. His voice was kind of raspy, and was very soft. Even then, Yuu felt like this boy's voice was a song he wanted to play on repeat for an odd reason.
"Yuuichiro." He replied after a moment.
"Want to listen to some music?" Apparently Mikaela asked, holding up the other earbud that wasn't in his ear.
"What do you have?" Yuu asked.
"Some Twenty-One Pilots, Imagine Dragons, Halsey, and Fall Out Boy." The blonde replied easily.
"That's a good line up, my stop is the Hyakuya one." I told him, putting the earbud in, and pausing as another wave of coughing overtook us. Peculiar, we both coughed at the same times. "I might fall asleep." He continued his voice sounding rougher than before.
"True that, but I'll stay awake so you can take a nap." The way his blue eyes sparkled when he said that took his breath away.
"Thank you." I managed to say after a moment of breathing control. He started the music, Colors by Halsey. This song reminded me of what I thought love would feel like.
The last lyrics I heard before drifting asleep were;
'You're ripped at every edge but you're a masterpiece,
And now I'm tearin' through the pages and the ink.'
Yuu was shaken awake by someone calling his name. He felt a little better, but over all, still crap.
"Yuu-chan! Your stop is coming up." He opened his eyes to very blue eyes he wanted to stay in forever, and blonde hair that caught the evening sunlight perfectly. Mikaela.
"Mikaela, okay, I'm up!" I said, looking somewhere past him.
"Call me Mika, I slipped my number in your pocket." He winked at me. He winked at me, and gave me his number? Hell must've frozen over. I'll remember to bring a jacket once I die.
"Mika, I'm up!" Yuu said because he was still shaking me. And just like that, he don't feel he's dying. A streak of raven black appeared in Mika's hair. Yuu can only assume there is now a streak of golden blonde in his.
"That was definitely the right call sneaking my number in your pocket." Mika said after a moment, grinning widely, pure happiness written across his face.
I sighed. Seems like I had a sly little shit all to me. Just what I wanted for Christmas.
