Nina
I couldn't believe how this night ended. The fear was real. McKayla was on edge. The shakes she was feeling only intensified and now I was at a loss for words to helping her. "Do you want something to eat?" I asked cautiously.
Mckayla never answered me, stuck in her thoughts. "Nina...I love you."
I sighed, "I know that."
This time, by the sudden movement she made, Mckayla stood beside me. "I would do anything for you. Sometimes, I think back to the time when we were cubs."
I smiled cupping her face, "you never told me that."
"No," Mckayla agreed. "It felt too unreal to talk about. As if that life belonged to someone else." Leaning against the tree Mckayla's eyes wondered off to the destruction of this beaten council meeting.
We were far off enough to have privacy from most. "Why are you telling me this now?"
Mckayla sighed. "Because...we've changed from being cubs. And again when I came back into your life several months ago. I wasn't who any of you remembered. I was broken and full of rage. No one could penetrate my heart."
"But we did, " I reminded her.
Mckayla nodded. "But now...I've changed again."
I snarled. "Mckayla...like the last time, we will get through this. It's not anything to worry--"
"I worry every second Nina." This time she held all of my attention. "Who am I? Am I good for you? Will you ever be safe with me? Would the pack?"
"You are the woman I fell in love with," I answered back matter-of-factly.
"Wrong," she snarled. Her words cut deep into me. It was evident by the affection in her eyes for me, she wasn't upset, only sadden. "I have changed one hundred percent. How I've seen things, felt things. What my appetite wants. I am not just Mckayla or Kayla anymore. I'm something more. A hybrid."
"And I know that too," I told her. "I'm not blind. And i get it now. You are scared. Kaylee will be okay. We will get her back."
"You love who I was," I said. "I will disappoint you. What if I become the monster Mason told you are used to be? Or worse."
"You would never. You have so many people who would fight for you."
"Nina...be honest...I see the way you look at me...my hybrid. That's fear and worry in your eyes when that part of me comes out."
What was she doing? "Then you be honest. Admit that you are trying to self sabotage what we have. What we can still have?"
By that question, Mckayla slumped more into the tree. "Since I was a cub...you have been the only woman I wanted out of all. I had other lovers..." Mckayla paused as if shaken by something than continued..."but you were always going to be my first choice." Mckayla grabbed onto my hand, pulling me closer to her. Her thumb rubbed over my small knuckles. Her eyes held firm to mines with warmth. "I will always love you. And I will never want another woman."
"Mckayla...please don't do this. Do not, throw us away."
My heart felt as if being squeezed by all the things that was supposed to keep my heart functioning properly. Betrayal. "Your hybrid...is new to everyone. I am not turning away from fear of your hybrid."
Mckayla looked off, a few breaths passing before facing me again. "I don't know. Maybe I am being a fool. But just for right now, I can't."
"Really? For now."
