Sage's POV
I put my diary in my backpack as I looked up at the sky. The sun was high and it was shining brightly. Strange for a cemetery. Usually it would be like the movies when the character is at a cemetery and the sky is dark and grey. This isn't like the movies sadly. This is real life. Real life where my mom isn't on earth anymore. She's up in heaven with grandma and grandpa aka her parents. Her stone was the kind that just laid flat on the ground. I was sitting against someone else's. Every week I come here and visit her. Life is no longer the same without mom. I pulled myself away from my thoughts when I heard a rock being thrown across the cemetery and landed in front of me. Where did this come from? I looked around and didn't see the culprit. I got up and grabbed my bag. I looked one last time before beginning my walk home.
Once I was home I put my bag by the door and flopped on the couch. I heard my dad walk in the living room and I looked at him.
"Sage. I need to talk to you", he said.
"Okay dad. Can I finish moping first?", I asked.
"Sage. Now", he replied.
"Alright", I said surrendering.
I sat up and made room for him. He sat down next to me not making eye contact.
"My boss gave me a promotion today", he began.
"Dad that's great", I said hugging him.
"Wait. There's more", he said.
"Is it bad?", I asked.
"Yes and no. As apart of my promotion, I have to go to Maine for a month to meet with other clients. I don't wanna take you out of school for a month so I'm leaving you here", he replied.
"By myself? For a month?", I asked.
"Its not as bad as it seems. I have the fridge stocked for you and I called one of my girl friends to see what else you'll need for a month and I bought your favorite snacks and stuff. I made sure all the bills are paid. All you have to do is make sure you wake up for school, shower, keep you clothes washed and go to bed on time", he explained.
"So I'm gonna be here for a month by myself?", I asked.
"Honey if you think about it, you'll be fine", he replied.
"But I can't be here alone for a month. What if someone broke in the house?", I asked.
"I have a security alarm. The code is 2099", he replied.
"What if the house caught on fire?", I asked.
"Then call the fire department", he replied.
"What if there's a tornado or a hurricane?", I asked.
"Go to the basement", he replied.
"Are you seriously gonna go?", I asked.
"Yes. I leave tomorrow. I'm sorry I had to tell you this last minute", he replied.
" It's okay dad. I understand. I'm gonna go upstairs. I've had a long day", I said.
"Alright", he said.
A whole month by myself. What am I gonna do?
