December 5, 1991
Oh boy, has it really been a while since I last wrote in you. I was just going through my things just cleaning my stuff out, when I found you in one of the boxes I put you in three years ago when we moved to San Diego. Let me tell you the timeline of my life so far.
Marty and I got married on September 27, 1988 on a Tuesday, because of course Marty decided to suggest it as a joke, but I took it seriously. We raised enough money to move back to America and to San Diego. It was about an hour or two to Tijuana so we thought we could just go to Mexico anytime. We do go sometimes.
Skylar started preschool about a year ago. She seems to love it. She's made some friends. About two years ago we found out she needed hearing aids. We were glad it wasn't anything too serious.
Marty is writing his first movie. I'm so proud of him, he's worked so hard for this. I work for the same ad company, just in a different area. Five months ago I gave birth to my baby boy Antonio "Tony" Diaz.
Our life is going great. We had no worries. It was going along just fine. It was... going fine until we received the news.
It was ten in the morning. I was making pancakes. Skylar was playing with her toys and Tony was sitting in his baby chair. Marty came from upstairs still in his pajamas.
"Smells so good" he pecked me on the lips.
"Thank you" I said.
"Mommy, when are we going to eat " Sky whined
"You don't wait, do you?" I said.
"I'm gonna turn on the t.v. Marty said."
"Put cartoons!" Sky exclaimed
"We have to see what's on the news first. We need to know what's going on in the world" Marty said. She groaned.
"How's that story writing going?" I asked him.
"It's going pretty great. I'm almost done with it."
"What is it about again?"
"You're gonna have to read it." I smiled. Then upon the news came the script I thought I wouldn't hear for another forty years.
Freddie Mercury is dead.
I turned around and watched the news anchor explain Freddie had revealed he had AIDS yesterday, which was true, and died this morning. I couldn't believe it. Freddie couldn't be dead, it was impossible.
I felt my eyes begin to water up. Marty looked over and saw the state I was in. He stood up and walked over to me and hugged me. I sobbed into his chest as hard as I could.
We went to his funeral. We knew Freddie's mother and sister. They knew Freddie and I were pretty close. We brought Sky and Tony with us because we couldn't find anyone to take care of them. Sky stayed close to me the entire time. She must have been so confused. She didn't remember who he was. The same man who used to make her giggle and sing little songs to her. It broke my heart that they were so close, and now she's at his funeral, not even knowing who he was.
Once it was over, everyone went outside. They were all whispering among themselves. Sky held my hand. She raised her arms signaling she wanted to be carried. I did. We made our way down the church steps.
"Are you okay?" Marty asked me.
"Yea, are you?" I asked him
"Yea" No matter how close Freddie was to us, he was still Marty's idol, and losing someone who inspires you is one of the worst things that can happen to you.
