As my eyes open, the realization sinks in that I fell asleep.
But only for five minutes..
"Cath, I brought your bottle of milk," Mom says as she sits on the side of my bed.
"Sorry to wake you, I just thought you'd want to drink it."
My mom reminded me of an innocent animal by the way she acted towards others. She is always so kind to strangers and to her loved ones. I admired her so much and I hope that I can be that way with others one day. She was one of the kindest people you could ever meet.
"It's okay, mom. I just needed a few minutes of shut eye," I say as I take the bottle of milk, opening it.
I take a few sips and smile as it goes down my throat. It tasted so good.
"I'm glad to hear that. I got you a little present."
"You did? How come?"
"Well, I've been wanting to give it to you for a while now but I would always forget to. I believe now is a good time to give it to you."
She opens her purse and takes what seems to be a journal.
She hands it to me with a warm smile on her face.
I take it and run my hand over the top.
It was a journal.
It was brown and it had a shape of a leaf on the cover. It also had what seemed to be clouds on it as well.
It was beautiful.
I smile at mom and hold her hand.
"Thank you, I love it."
"Your dad is always writing songs and he has dozens of notebooks filled with lyrics that have been heard. But also with lyrics that only he knows and that only he understands. I want you to write in this journal about whatever you want. I want you to discover things about yourself that you never have before. I know you have the capability to do so. So let's call this "The Discovery Journal."
The Discovery Journal.
It had a nice ring to it.
"You didn't have to give me this."
"Yes I did and I did it because I love you. You mean the absolute world to me."
"I love you mom."
"And I love you."
We share a hug and as we pull away, someone knocks the door.
"Come in," I say.
"We brought lunch!!" Dad says as he enters.
"We?" Mom and I say in confusion.
Uncle Josh appears behind him, smiling.
A cheesy smile spreads across my face.
They made up.
Everything was back to normal.
"You guys made up!" I say in excitement.
"Yes we did and I'm so glad. I missed your old man," Uncle Josh says as he brings in three bags full of tacos.
"We're the same age, Josh."
"Oh," He blushes. "Sometimes I forget."
"Sometimes?" He laughs.
"Shut up, Tyler."
Mom and I share a look then laugh.
"I don't know about you guys, but, I'm starving. Give me my food, dad."
He hands me my food and I take out the tacos and start eating.
"She's practically devouring those tacos," Uncle Josh laughs.
"It's taco bell, can you blame her?" Dad replies as he starts eating.
"That's true. Well, let's eat!"
"We already started." I point out.
We all eat our tacos in happiness and things finally felt like they were back to normal.
And that, warmed my heart.
