Chapter 12: holidays

Saito POV

It was the first day of the holiday break over Christmas and New Years, I was doing the homework that was assigned; Chizuru and Heisuke were coming over in a hour to pick me up so we could do some last minute Christmas shopping.

Looking up from my desk, the letter from my mother sat propped up against my pencil - unopened.

I knew what was inside, it will be the same letter as last year, and the year before that, and the year before. No point in opening it really, no use in seeing her full name scrawled across. Not even mom, just her full business name like I was nothing more than a client to her.

Well I suppose that isn't true; she remembers her clients birthday and Christmas cards. Never mind,
I have my studies to keep me occupied, what would I need a family for right?

Loud knocking on the front door startled me. Jumping up, I pushed my books back knocking over the letter and scrambling to my feet. "Saito!" Heisuke called from outside. Setting the letter up properly, I took the stairs two at a time, landing with a muted this in the hall.

"Happy Holidays Saito-San!" Chizuru-chan beamed at me, handing me a bag of gifts, "Yeah! Happy holidays Saito-San!" Heisuke also handed me a messily wrapped box, with a card taped to the top. "Thank you very much, nth of you." I let them in and placed the presents on the counter.

"I'll go and get your gifts," I said and went back up stairs to my room, opening my cupboard and gathering the two bags filled with sweets, gifts and a card each. I had gotten Heisuke a watch so he's not late, Chizuru a scarf because her old one was getting tattered and a small plush rabbit as the first time I met her was in the snow in middle school, she had made snow bunnies.

Handing them their gifts, Heisuke opens his excitedly, "Hey cool! This watch is awesome! I was meaning to buy one but this is awesome!" He thanked me as Chizuru opened hers.
"KYA!" She exclaimed loudly and I chuckled. "You like it?" I asked and she nodded, wrapping her new scarf around her and cuddling the plush toy.

"Oh! Kawaii! Saito-San you shouldn't have!" She hugged me excitedly and I grinned. "Ee eh, it's not much." I said and opened mine. Heisuke had gotten me a picture of the old shinsengumi head quarters, along with multiple katana themed trinkets. I placed the small metal katana necklace around my neck and nodded approvingly. "This is really cool." I chuckled and he jumped about happily. "Glad you like it!" He laughed, stuffing his sweets into his mouth.

Chizurus gift was a new set of top of the range headphones, Bluetooth built in and they took notes and played it back! "KYA! Chizuru-chan! You really shouldn't have! This is brilliant!" I said excitedly and she sighed in relief.

"I'm so glad you like it! I was worried in case you didn't! I couldn't figure out what to get you then I remember how you love to study with head phones in and I saw this and thought they were perfect." She said hurriedly and I grinned at her.

"You two are the bestest friends ever." I said and hugged them round the neck. They laughed.

On our way to into the heart of the city,
we passed Okita-Sans street so I sighed. Might as well get over the awkwardness sometime....and check his homework, I thought mentally. I hadn't told Heisuke or Chizuru about the kiss.

The kiss that made me heart beat out of chest, makes me giddy when I think about it and furious that I let it happen. I was just so worried and terrified that he could have gotten hurt jumping out that window. I mean for Christ sake! A window.

"Why don't we ask Okita-San to join us?" I suggested and Chizuru nodded, "That would be nice, he seems to have changed quite a bit since meeting you Saito-San." She said, then placing her hand on her chin she chuckled, "I guess you have too." She giggled slightly and I rubbed my neck, you have no idea Chizuru-chan.

"Which one is his house?" Heisuke asked and I pointed to the medium sized house at the end of the lane. As we walked closer, Heisuke setting his watch to the time on my phone, shouting could be heard from the street.

"Is that arguing? Yeesh that's worse than my parents!" Heisuke said nervously. "Wait here." I said to my friends and I walked towards the house, knocking the front door loudly to be heard.

"SOUJI GET THE DOOR!"

"I am! Jesus..." Okita-San mumbled as he opened the door. "Hajime-Kun?" He said surprised and I smiled nervously, "Uh....w-we were passing by and um wanted to know if you'd like to come with us?" I stuttered and he looked over his shoulder. A case went flying past, smashing into the wall with a loud crash.

".....yeah let's go." He pushed me out the door, snatching his wallet and jacket. "Was that your parents?" I asked timidly as we walked down his driveway. He nodded, "Yep." He popped the 'P' and I nodded silently.
""Are they going to get a divorce?" I asked. Mentally slapping myself I gaped, WHO THE HELL ASKS THAT HAJIME?!

Okita-San laughed, "God I hope so." He chuckled as we reached Heisuke and Chizuru, "Hey Heisuke, Chizuru-chan." He nodded to them. And they waved. "Hey Souji!" Heisuke replied. "We're doing some last minute Christmas shopping, then a bit to eat and a movie." Chizuru relaid our plan and he nodded. "Sounds good!"

He slipped his arm around my shoulders, my footing faltered for a moment before regaining my composure, "Movie date huh?" He smirked. Heisuke and Chizuru were a few steps in front of us. My face blazed as he whispered in my ear. Breathe Saito, breathe!

Wrapping my white scarf further around my mouth he chuckled. "I won't pull anything while your friends are here, chill Hajime-Kun." He let me go and stepped up to Chizuru and Heisuke laughing.

"Well come on Hajime-Kun!" They laughed. Rolling my eyes, I ran to catch up.  "Oh but when your friends leave you're all mine." Okita -San whispered quickly into my ear. I gulped.
