Rhea, Ashton and I were walking down the hallway to the headmistress's office. She made an announcement for all gifted students to come to her office. Her office was huge so all fifty of us easily fit in the room. The older students didn't seem surprised that we were here on Saturday morning but the first year students were gossiping on why we were here. Usually on Saturdays the students were allowed to take the boat to the main island and hang out there. As long as we were back by 7:00 we were pretty much allowed to do whatever we wanted.
Headmistress Lawrence came in and blew a cold breeze at all of us, signaling us to be quiet. The room went silent as we all waited for her to speak.
"First year students, I understand that you are probably wondering why you are here. Older years, you may continue through the door with Sir Andrews. I'll see you all by seven."
The older students shuffled out, leaving eleven students standing in the room.
I looked over at the older students leaving and realized something.
You couldn't see them on the other side of the door.
That wasn't your normal entry way.
Headmistress whistled at us to get our attention, "OK students. You might have noticed something peculiar about that exit. That is not your average doorway students. That is a portal to the our home. Our dimension."
Ashton looked over at Rhea and I with a quizzical expression on her face. She obviously was having a hard time figuring out what was going on. Rhea just shrugged and I turned my attention back to Headmistress Lawrence.
"When evil tried to take over, it destroyed most of our dimension. That's why you all were born into the human world. To stay safe. Evil tore up most of our home until we managed to defeat it."
Headmistress seemed to falter while saying the last sentence. Like she wasn't telling the whole truth.
A blond girl raised her hand, "So why are we going there?"
Headmistress sighed,"I was getting there. So, our dimension is small and a little weak so there aren't many portals left in this world. The size of our land used to be the size of two earths. Now, it's about the size of Mexico," she looked away and took a slight pause before continuing, "gifted students here at Acrylic are still allowed to visit once a month to shop, hang out, and explore our dimension. It's not to different from earth besides the element moving and weird creatures." She chuckled to herself. Some teachers passed out some necklaces to the other students but skipped Rhea, Ashton and I. Rhea raised her hand but Headmistress simply ignored her.
"When you want to come home, just hold the stone on the necklace between your two thumbs. Ashton, Rhea and Natalia. We have some matters to discuss so stay behind for a few minutes. The rest of you may leave with Madame Bucklemouth." The students wearily shuffled out of the room, leaving us alone with Headmistress.
Ashton was about to speak but Headmistress Lawrence beat her to it, "You girls seem to be uneasy when we talk about the evil. Your teachers have come to me about it. It's almost like you three are trying to decipher something you shouldn't. You three don't need to go into these matters quite yet. There's no need to be worried."
She put on an obviously fake smile but I could hear her heart hammering in her chest. She was nervous.
Rhea saw the fakeness of the smile as well, "Headmistress, we just have a few unanswered questions..."
Headmistress shook her head vigorously, "No questions until you are older. You stop aging at age eighteen so that and that is also when you will be coronation as the rulers of the sun lands, the moon lands, and the star lands. We are already building the lands over the ruins of our old dimension. They should be ready in about three years but until then some of us will have to continue living in secret here on earth." She gave us a half smile, "Now run along and go through the portal. I suggest taking the phone booths... You step inside, say a location, and it takes you there. Here's the list that Madame Bucklemouth and Sir Andrews handed to the other students. It's a list of places to go. Go explore. When you girls want to come back, press your middle finger on your left hand onto the stone and say, Acrylic Boarding School and it will take you there."
Ashton gave Headmistress a hard stare," We have to wait three years for answers to our questions?"
Headmistress's face hardened and she looked at us dead in the eyes, "Yes, and if I find you three meddling around in stuff you shouldn't be messing with, you will be in a heap of trouble," her expression then changed to a huge smile as she got up from her chair and gently shoved us out the door, "Go on now. See you soon."
I looked at Ashton and Rhea, and they looked back at me. We all hooked arms and gave each other one last look before jumping through the door.
