The not so tall Tale of Caleb and Jonah

Caleb stomped into the water of the lake, enjoying the feel of the cold water on his skin. These four free hours a day were the ones he lived for, it really helped him.

He splashed and kicked for a while, completely lost in his own world. The air was crisp, and it looked like it was going to rain shortly. The smell of rain was in the air already, filling everyone's noses, and making them feel calm. Caleb loved rain, it made him feel safe, and never lonely. The rain always filled the silences that occured when he was alone, which was often.

Caleb didn't grieve anymore, he just celebrated. He felt that his parent's lives were well spent, and that he would make it up by doing the right thing and fighting in this war. It's not even like he had a choice. Soilders of the gifted world arrived only two hours after his parents were killed, and twenty minutes before Caleb came back from school.

It was obvious Caleb missed his school, his friends, and his life, but he never showed it. Nor would he anytime in the future. No one understood, and Caleb accepted that.

A shadow appeared from behind Caleb, and he turned his head to see none other than Jonah standing there, smiling.

"Hi," Jonah said awkwardly.

"Hey there!" Caleb said in a cheerier tone. There was no reason to be awkward, they were a family now, just like Natalia said.

Jonah still didn't understand why he came over to Caleb, he just did. It was almost like his feet had acted on their own.

"I have a feeling there's something you want to tell me," Caleb said, his tone unchanging. "Let's sit."

Jonah sat awkwardly on the grass next to Caleb, both of them looking out at the pond.

"It happened to me too you know, "Jonah whispered.

Caleb's head turned to him, "What?"

"With your parents, and coming here without a choice. No one knew about me gift, until I hypnotized one of the soilders coming into my house. My parents were dead on the floor. They examined me, and then shipped me off to Acrylic. I'm not even old enough to go there!

"I was scared, and I wouldn't let people see I was grieving. No one understood. Then I met Natalia. I know she seems intimidating, just because she doesn't talk much and because she's the moon child, but she has gone through a lot in her life. It's amazing what she has overcome.

"Caleb, I was in the same spot as you. Lonely and confused. But, I'm going to help you, just like Natalia did to me. You remind me a lot of myself, not just because of our parents though. We have the same drive, and the same attitude," Jonah sat in silence once more waiting for Caleb to respond.

Caleb was more shocked than anything. He didn't know how to respond. He didn't expect this sort of thing. But all the less, it made his heart grow three sizes. Someone understood. Plus he was just compared to one of the most powerful people in the world. A person who had an unknown gift that was scary and powerful.

"Thank you Jonah. Maybe you're right.," Caleb whispered.

Jonah smirked, "I'm always right."

The two boys hugged, and stared out at the sun setting across the lake once again.
