My closest member in my herd was Sienna so I was glad to have her there tonight. I explained what had happened and she didn't even know what to say. I looked over at Sunpearl. She was asleep with my colt. And she wondered why I hated her. I layed down next to Lizzie. She was already asleep and I fell asleep next to her.
...
"Blaze I think our foal is coming!" I squealed in delight until a twang of pain popped in my abdomen. He was definitely coming. I fell to my side and out popped a little colt. He was a chestnut palomino color. His tail had black and grey in it. We had decided on the name Hotpepper or Pepper for short. Blaze looked at me and put his face against mine and breathed gently into my nose.
"I love you sunny." He whispered oh so lovingly. My heart pounded with delight.
"I love you too." I responded to him as we layed down together.
We huddled together. We were the leaders of the herd and everyone was thrilled to meet the baby. Blaze had stood up and started picking and choosing what he wanted. That included kicking some of the mares out of the herd that couldn't keep up as fast anymore because of their age. That included one of the friendliest horses in the herd, Rubyfire. He knew it was wrong but he had claimed that it was necessary to keep the rest of the herd safe.
"What are you saying Blaze?! You can't just leave horses out to starve! That's just wrong!"
"You know what Sunny? It's my herd I can do what I want!" We were yelling pretty loudly and the fight was pretty ugly.
"Blaze! You can't leave innocent horses out to starve! We go as one! How would you feel if you were one of them! Do you want to be just like your father?!" I knew I had hit a hard spot when I said it because his father had kicked Silverblaze and his mother of their herd when his dad didn't want them there anymore and hee immediately went cold. Silverblaze glared at me.
"Sunpearl Come here."
He looked at a little palomino mare a little younger than me. She trotted over.
"Yes Silverblaze?" She looked at him.
"You are now the lead mare." Silverblaze glared at me some more.
"Sundancer you need to leave. Get out." His words hurt my heart deeply. I looked at him.
"I'm keeping Pepper with me Sunny. Get out. NOW." He looked at me and I walked away from the herd all by myself....
...
I woke up shaking and crying gently. It was a dream. It felt more like a flashback. My heart ached remembering that day. I glanced over at Pepper and sighed as I looked at Lizzie. At least she loved me.
