The air was cool and crisp the next morning. This could only mean winter was closer. I hated the winter, many horses died from the cold as winters were harsh here. I worried about Pepper, this would be his first winter. I worried even more about meeting Sundancer. If she said she was his mother it would hurt him after not knowing for so long. Both that she hadn't come sooner and that I hadn't told him. That mare hated me though, I couldn't exactly ask her not to say anything. We spent the day teaching the foals how to survive when winter hit. Me and Silverblaze had offered to teach them all and give their mothers some time to graze in peace. We explained to them how they'd have to break ice to drink out of the stream and how they'd have to move the snow to eat grass, and mentioned the grass would be dead but still edible. This was my first year as lead mare so I was a bit nervous about the winter honestly. I knew if any of these foals died I'd feel incredibly guilty. We all had been nervous about the change of scenery but by mid afternoon everyone seemed relaxed in this place. Of course nothing could stay nice and cozy though. I heard one of the other mares call out a warning and looked in the direction it came from. When I saw what she'd warned us about I rushed the foals into the cave, I didn't want them out here for this. Trotting over the hill, her golden fur gleaming in the sunlight was Sundancer.
