{Soul's POV}
'Huh? What's going on? Where... Is this the nurses office?... What am I doing here?..'
With one glance, the room was clearly the school's infirmary: the blaring LED lights, the now-fenced up window, the linoleum tiles and walls painted a sickening yellow. As if the patients didn't feel ill enough.
"Soul?"
'Who was that?'
I shifted my head to face the inner part of the room and saw Maka, Kid, Tsubaki, Tashi and the Thompson sisters staring at me anxiously. What was with them?
"What happened?" I asked. It was the typical question someone who woke up lying in a hospital bed with no recollection of how they got there would ask.
Maka's face fell sad, Kid stared at the floor, Tashi was keeping his eyes on the barred window and even Patti looked upset.
"It's y/n, she's..."
I stopped her there. "Where's Blackstar?"
It was painfully obvious something bad had happened, and even though I was scared to know what it was, Blackstar's absence stuck out like a sore thumb.
Kid and Tashi stiffened. Kid was squeezing his fists so tight the knuckles had gone white.
Maka told me everything, and it all came back to me- up until the part where I'd gone unconscious anyway-, but the seed of anxiety that had planted in the pit of my stomach has sprouted into a full-fledged tree by the time Maka was finished.
"What do you mean that witch took her! How?!"
"It was a murder of crows," Tashi spoke up. "Far more than the small group who attacked Y/n before. We ran from it, Blackstar, Kid and I with you and Y/n unconscious but there was too many. Way, way too many."
I clenched my jaw. "How many crows are we talking?"
"Fifty," said Kid. "At the very least, fifty."
I nodded. "What happened then?"
Tashi shrugged. "Well, they attacked us, but not very hard. They pretty much left you, Blackstar and I alone. We still tried to kill as many as possible, but with you and Y/n being the only weapons there it was pretty hard. There wasn't much Kid could do when over fifty birds were attacking him savagely and he didn't even have a weapon."
"I could have handled it," Kid growled menacingly. "If only Blackstar hadn't..."
"He didn't mean to.." Tsubaki murmured under her breath.
"What did he do?" I asked them quietly, afraid of the answer.
Tashi told me that Blackstar had tried to take Y/n off of Kid, saying he could deal with her and the birds, but as soon as Y/n was out of Kid's arms for the split second that she was the entire murder had swooped in and practically tore the two boys hands to pieces.
I stole a glance at Kid's hands to see how badly they were injured, but he was wearing gloves. Must have been pretty bad.
When Tashi had tried to help Kid and Blackstar the birds had practically made a wall out of their wings.
"It was like one of those fights in cartoons where you can't see the two characters fighting, only the cloud of dust they create," said Tashi.
When the birds had parted, Y/n was gone and only Kid and Blackstar were left, crouched in a puddle of blood on the cobblestone street.
"Where was I?" I asked them.
"Blackstar had hidden you in one of the house's gardens. I carried you back here since the other two weren't totally up for the task."
It still didn't all seem right for me. "Where were Death Scythe and Professor Stein? Lord Death must have been watching, he can't have just left you three to defend yourselves against a foe that big all alone, right?"
"He was pretty occupied," Maka answered my question- though not really answering it at the same time, seeing as I still didn't know where they had been.
My confused look was enough for her to catch on to. "The witch had made an appearance here at the academy while you guys were out. She needed some way to distract Lord Death while she was trying to take Y/n, and 'if you want something done you have to do it yourself'. That's what she said while she was leaving."
I frowned. "So, what? She just showed up here and waited around until her birds were done?"
Maka nodded. "Pretty much."
I let out an exasperated breath and collapsed on my pillow. "Where's Y/n now?"
"My father's on it at the moment,"
Kid told me. "He's currently searching for her, but last time I checked with him she has to be pretty far away. She's not in the city, or it's outskirts.""Makes sense..." I muttered, slowly shutting my eyes. When you had gone to as much trouble as Phiona had to capture someone, you're not just going to wave a massive flag, shoot flares and cry out 'She's over here! She's over here!'.
At that moment, Professor Stein walked in and asked how I was doing. I said I was fine, other then the fact that I was the complete and utter opposite, and thanked him for asking. He told us that Lord Death thought he was close to finding Y/n and that- fingers crossed- he would find her in the next hour. I pointed out that it was quick, Stein said he'd been looking since Tashi, Blackstar and Kid had returned with me in their arms. When I asked how long ago that was, he said it had been almost a week. Figures.
I should have reacted differently to all the news I was receiving, but it was just too much. I couldn't exactly jump off the bed in shock with each piece of bad news I'd gotten or I probably would have been hospitalised another week due to head injuries.
"Do you think I'll be able to go with you guys to find her?" I asked, my question mainly directed at Stein.
I couldn't see his eyes behind his glasses, but he had a small smile which relaxed me a small bit. "I'm sure you'll be fine, you have been asleep an entire week, after all."
I chuckled, and he left the room, bringing with him everyone except for Maka. What a nice Meister.
