Eight years ago....
"Buck, stop moving or you'll pull out the cannula and rip your stitches" I snapped half jokingly at the biker man in my SS ward. He had to be at least twenty six to my twenty three. He had been admitted into A and E a few days before and had been transferred in here when the doctors decided to do further tests. He had come in after a knife fight with a wound to the stomach. In the days he had been in my ward we had become good acquaintances. The first time I spoke to him he mocked my Irish accent and I had retaliated in kind. From then on we just clicked, he seemed almost impressed that I had responded to him at all. He had a good sense of humour that meant whenever someone was in his room you could hear them laughing the whole way down the hall. He also had an adorable girlfriend, Layla, who hardly left his side and his club brothers who seemed to be roaming the halls all hours of the day.
It was my first time in the job after qualifying as a general nurse in September of last year. I'd moved out of Ireland over to America to work and had been lucky in getting a position in a local hospital in the town I was staying in.
"I'm sick of lying in bed, Millie. I'm fucking leaving" he snapped back at me. He seemed scary but was something of a gentle giant.
"You can't and you know it. You walk out of here and I'll be seeing you again soon" I said back, " now let me get the blood pressure and I'll be gone" I smiled at his grumpiness. Strapping on the cuff I stared at the machine waiting on a reading.
"Jesus you look like shit" I heard from the door behind me and, startled, turned to see who had spoken. "Then again you've always been an ugly fuck" the man grinned at Buck and I froze. Completely shut down.
He was tall, taller than Buck who was 6'2. He had shaggy brown hair that hung into his equally brown eyes.
"Language, you ass, in front of the lady" Buck said back gesturing to me and I giggled slightly at his accusation when he's spent the last number of days cursing. The man, smiling hugely, focused on me and I felt his gaze on every part of me.
" well hello nurse..?" He wanted my name. He wanted my name and I couldn't speak! The machine beeped taking my focus back to it. I wrote down the results and turned to a grinning Buck who was looking between me and the man who still stood in the door.
"You're doing good, you still need to rest up for me though. I'll be back in a while with your antibiotic and to check the dressings" I said softly and turned to leave. The man still hasn't moved out of the door and showed no intention of moving. To pass him I had to turn and squeeze by and I still somehow managed to rub up against him. Keep in my eyes focused on the floor I whispered an 'excuse me' before I escaped, hearing an amused Buck calling out after me,"thanks Millie"."Did you see them? I swear if I didn't love Daniel and was happily married.." I walked into the tea room to hear those words leaving Ginas mouth. I smiled as it dawned on me that they were talking about Bucks brothers again. The biker club had become the talk of the ward in the last number of days.
"Do you see the new guy in there now? I've never seen him before but damn!" Stacey spoke and laughing broke out in the packed little room.
"I know right"
"Hes hardly spared anyone a glance though and believe me we've all walked into that room to get his attention" Ruth huffed.
"I heard Buck say his name. Its Cut...how sexy is that?" Gina hummed.
"Hey!you're married you've got a hot guy, leave some for everyone else" Stacey said back. I smiled at their banter as I took a seat at the table.
" I think Mil should get in there, he's been watching her all day" Ruth spoke up looking at me like she expected me to confirm it. They each in turned looked at me.
"Yeah... no" I laughed shaking my head.
"Oh come on! You're too young to not be living so do us all a favour and live wild... Go wild with him!" Gina laughed. Laughing too I changed the topic of conversation before I settled back into my chair.
Cut, I whispered in my head, it somehow suited him. That was the first encounter I had had with Luke 'Cut' Stoker and little did I know it would be far from the last.
