Present day...
Keep calm Millie, just breathe.
Those were the words I repeated to myself a hundred times over and over again when I was led from that room back upstairs into a far scarier room. It was far scarier due to the fact that about seven men, Cut included, sat around a table staring at me. A chair was pulled up and I was prompted to sit down. That's where I was right now.
What was worse was that I knew some of these men from a time long ago. Time had been kind to each one of them. Their rugged good looks had the effect of making you want to stare at them for hours while simultaneously it had you wanting to run and hide.
"We need all we can get on him from you" Switch said while sliding a A4 pad towards me, "write it all down" he said in a no bullshit voice. Leaning forward I grabbed the notepad and pen while he continued to talk. "I'll get that from you later today. We've decided that you have our protection." I looked into his extremely serious eyes " that means no one touches you from here on out. But we ain't free darling" he finished and I blanched.
"I don't... I don't have a lot of money" I said back in a weak voice.
"I figured that. What you can do is work the price off. The bar in town is ours, you can waitress at it for the time being" Switch offered to me.
"Are you sure?" I said and watched surprise leak into his expression.
"What do you mean?" He asked and I involuntarily looked toward Cut who stared back like I was nobody to him. I quickly turned back to Switch.
"Never mind... I'll take it. Thank you" I said.
"We have a room here, it's nothing fancy but it's yours if you want it" he said back while shifting his eyes between Cut and me. I just nodded my head, the journey of my day starting to exhaust me.
"I'll show you where it is" that came from a man to my left and it took me a full minute of intense staring to realise it was Buck. I almost wept. It suddenly dawned on me that I was getting back a life I had longed so much for and with that clarity I felt myself becoming off balance with it all.
Being in the presence of these people brought back the memories I thought had been long forgotten.
"I'd like to go there now if that's ok" my voice held my unease and it was not lost on me that each and every one of the men noticed it. Without a word Buck rose from his seat and showed me from the room. The walk to the new bedroom was silent but not unpleasant. Once there, he left me to get settled, telling me to write down all I could on Jonathan.
"Its good to see you Millie" he said before shutting the door behind him.
"I love you Mommy"
Those words settled right into my heart as tears slipped slowly from my eyes.
I was still in my room in the compound hours later, having declined the offer to join the men for dinner. Instead I was on the phone with my little boy.
"I love you too . I'll be with you soon honey, I'm just sorting some stuff ok?" I whispered back to him.
"I miss you" he whispered back.
"I know honey. But be good for aunt Lucy and I'll come get you soon Fiachra" I blew kisses down the phone and listened to him talk about his day before I hung up. I knew I'd eventually have to take him out of Lucy's hands and bring him here with me but I knew in my soul that the more I could put it off the better the outcome would be.
