Millie p.o.v
"Induced coma? Icu?"
Everything the doctor said to me rang out loudly, above the busy antics of the hospital. I knew what those words meant and what they said about Aines state. It had been thirty six hours since we came through emergency, Aines being rushed straight to surgery while I was stitched up in the A and E department.
Fear raced through me.
"For how long?" I asked.
"As long as she needs it. I'm afraid it depends on Aine herself. She needs this time" she smiled a small sad smile at me before leaving. Slowly I walked my way out of the ward into the waiting area where everyone was, having been told by the medical team that only Aines Family could come through.
They all stood tall on my arrival.
"Well?" Switch snapped at me before I could even open my mouth.
"Induced coma, she's in icu for recovery, we'll know more as the week goes on. They're keeping very close eyes on her."
"What does it mean for her, induced coma?" Tara asked, arms wrapped tight around her waist.
"It means that she's got swelling in her brain and they're hoping that medically putting her under will reduce the stress on her brain and in turn reduce the chances...of brain damage" I finished on a whisper, feeling those words hit me deep. Feeling the pain of them slide thickly down my throat, settling deep in my gut.
I watched those words have the same impact on everyone, them all slowly hanging their heads, sitting slowly back into their seats or cursing furiously under their breaths.
"You need to go home and rest", Pin said in his soft voice, making his way over to me. I nodded, "Everyone does, time to head guys, we can come back after a few hours of sleep" he raised his voice so everyone could hear him. Slowly everyone started making their way out of the building, moving as a unit, giving strength to each other.
"I'm just going to get tea"
"No go to bed, I'll bring it in to you"
"Pin, I can make tea, it's okay"
"Yes well I wasn't stabbed less than two days ago,you were. So honey, rest and let me take care of you" he said making his way into my kithen. I veered off down the hall at the slow pace, the pain Meds starting to loose their effect. I didn't go into Fiachra to check on him because he was in Switches house being minded by Layla. Stripping down I got into bed, pulling the covers high up to my cheeks and squeezing my pillow close.
Pin entered the room a few minutes later, leaving it in the dark I had cast it in. Kneeling down at the side of the bed., he put tablets in my hand and handed me the cup without a word. Swallowing downturn the tablets I rested back down on my pillow staring up at him.
"Pin?" I whispered.
" Yeah?" He whispered back looking into my eyes.
"What if she isn't okay? What will Fiach and I do?" I sounded haunted.
"Can't think like that, honey, can't build life on the 'what ifs'" he whispered back. I nodded my head in a jerky motion.
" You're right" I agreed trying to convince myself.
"We'll go back in the morning, soon as you wake up" he said and I nodded again giving him a small smile.
"Thank you. Thank you for being here" I whispered. Reaching out he brushed the hair from my face, caressing my cheek gently.
"He's a fucking idiot and I hate that he gets it all" he said almost to himself before he rose and kissed my forehead, "I'll be on the couch if you need me". The door closed behind him, leaving only his words.
"Who?" I whispered but the silence didn't answer.
"So, I bought flowers and I know you're laughing but get over it, it's a rule in a hospital that flowers are bought to people so deal with it. Also I got you a card, everyone's signed it because we love you and all that so..." I stopped my fiddling and rearranging of her desk and looked over at her. So peaceful looking even bruised and battered. It had been a week, a week of her getting better and improving but still in a coma state, still unsure of the outcome. Three days ago she was moved from ICU into another ward.
Sitting down in the seat beside her I grabbed her hand and raised it to my lips.
"Need you back, I need you to come back to me Aine" I whispered against the back of her hand. "I never told you but you're the glue, me and Fiachra, we wouldn't be able last without you, you keep us grounded. You need to wake up Babe, so he can come see his aunt and you can tell him you're okay. So you can tell me you're okay" I whispered to her, feeling tears leak slowly from my eyes. Her fingers stayed limp in my hand, the machine beeping steadily beside her bed was the only response I got.
"How is she?" Came from behind me, breaking me out of my thoughts. Cut stood there, flowers in his hands.
"She's okay" I said, wiping my eyes and turning back to Aine. "Hasn't woken yet".
"She will when she's ready, Aine always did things on her own terms" fondness was evident in his voice.
"Yeah" I laughed softly.
"Fiachra wants to come by" Cut said gently.
"Yeah... we'll bring him in maybe next week sometime, when her bruising has gone down a bit" I looked up at him. He was gazing at me with a funny expression.
"Yeah, we will" was all he said though. Nodding my head I stood up and stretched.
" I need to get going " I smiled small at him before turning to Aine," hun, I'll be back soon I just have a few things to sort out" leaning forward I planted a kiss on her forehead.
"See you, Cut" I left him in the room closing the door behind me. Jogging out into the rain outside I got into my car quickly to avoid getting soaked.
The car door was caught in Cuts hand before I could get it closed.
"Cut what are you doing?" I asked him in surprised.
"We need to talk" he said firmly.
"What-about what?" The sound of rain echoed around the car.
"Us"
"What?!" I repeated again in a higher pitch. "Cut,I can't do this- there is no us" I went to close the door again but he stepped forward, stopping me.
"There's always been an us, Millie. We lost our way but we never ended Mill. You're mine, always been and always will be. Pin needs to understand that" he almost snarled the last part. Shocked I jerked back.
"Oh not this shit again" I shook my head in disgust.
"Mill-" he started but I cut him off.
"I am not yours",I screamed, " you have her, shes your old lady and I have a future to decided what I want to do with it. I get to decide, not you! And-"
"She's gone." He interrupted me.
"Who?" I asked, voice verging on hysteric.
"Jessica. We're done" he said it so simply, like it sorted life's problems.
"That doesn't change jack shit and you know it" I snapped and anger leaked into his face.
"Yes it fucking does!" He growled.
" No it doesn't? What am I meant to be-thrilled, happy, feel honoured? All you've proved is once again you can get rid of someone who is meant to be your everything out of your life without paused, thought or feeling!" I fired back and in turn he stepped back. His entire body locked and his expression became void before he slammed my car door closed and walked away in the lashing rain without turning back.
"Fuck" I slammed my hands against the steering wheel before covering my face, my breath leaving me in pants.
Involuntary tears threatened to leak but I blinked them back as I slowly concentrated on driving the car.
Rain pounded against the roof and windows of the car, slamming grimly into them.
I'd always considered life as a series of roads, that each decision made lead you down a certain road that opened you up to many other roads, while the roads you've passed faded into nothing, no longer holding opertunity for you. I'd always thought that there was never a bad road that you could head down, only that they were different from others, neither good nor bad just different. I'd never regretted a decision made because while some roads were rough, it always settled out into a good place.
However, driving home, I had a horribly feeling that I may have forced myself down a road in the heat of the moment and it was one I'd most definitely come to regret in the future.
"Fuck" I whispered again.
