Present day
"Mammy look! Aunt Lucy got me a new fire truck" Fiachra sat in the middle of Lucy's livingroom chatting happily about his new found wonders while I was gone. Lucy busily handed out mugs of tea to everyone as we sat around watching him.
I could see the questions in their expression as they looked at my boy.
"What age is he?" Buck growled out roughly, his eyes never leaving Fiachra. Before I had the chance to speak Fiachra raised his eyes to Bucks.
"I'm seven, I was six up until the 12th of February but now I'm seven because that was my birthday...me and Mom always celebrate my birthday" his goofy grinned turned my way and eased the tension surrounding my heart. "Mom and I" I smiled and corrected back at him. I could feel the girls gazes on me, calculating and making assumptions but I refused to meet their eyes. Instead I brought my focus to Lucy.
"I'll have to be going Lucy." I said quietly and watched as she paused and focused on me. A silent understanding passed between us before she reached down and picked Fiachra up.
"Alright buddy let's get you in the car and sorted for your trip with your Mom" she breezily made her way out the front door towards the truck. Once the car seat was in place and everyone was ready to go, I walked Lucy back up to her door.
"Thank you honey. I owe you" I gave her a hug, one she returned with a fierce squeeze.
"Nonsense. That boy is a ray of sunlight. You take care you hear? I'll be visiting when its safe yeah?" Tears hit her eyes but she tried to blink them back.
"Of course" I whispered giving her a final hug.

The trip home was filled with child's conversation and games. Fiachra spoke adamantly about everything I had missed while we had been apart. I could see his charm slowly breaking through everyone in the car, even Buck. Watching my boy I couldn't help the pride I felt. He was always something special but everyday it seemed to hit me harder and harder just how amazing a child he was.
"See that's why I'm Irish... I was born over there. Me and mommy...mommy and I.... We lived there for like three years!" Fiachra nodded his head toward Tara who had asked what Lucy's play structure in the garden was like to play on and somehow, Fiachra had gotten the conversation back to where he had lived and unfortunately there were several different places. His comment about Ireland froze everyone though.
"You stayed there?" Layla asked me an underlining question to her initial one. I opened my mouth to answer but fiachra bet me to it.
"Yeah mommy lived there with me in her belly and then we lived there for awhile and then we decide to go on an adventure and came over here and every once in a while we'd take smaller adventures to different apartments and places here" he smiled at each of them in turn. I turned my head to the window hoping they would be satisfied with his answer and not push it any further. We were coming closer and closer to the compound and the unease was starting to settle like lead in my stomach.
"Baby there's going to be a lot of people here so be on your best behaviours and mind your manners" I warned him in a stern motherly voice. He nodded without lifting his head from his toys.
"Its nice" layla said softly looking at me. I tilted my head in confusion.
"What is?" I asked.
"Seeing you being with him... I don't know, your complete or something" her cheeks pinked in embarrassment as mine pinked in appreciation.
"Thanks" I smiled the same time as Fiachra looked up and smiled at me.
"Us against the world Mommy".

To say I was nervous walking into the compound would be an understatement. I held Fiachras hand in one of mine and nervously twisted my hair in the other. The moment we entered the kitchen and all eyes turned our way, I felt it coming.
"Well buddy" said Switch as he wrapped his arms around Tara. Many of the other men sat around watching as we made our slow way over to them.
I saw the change in them all the minute Fiachra raised his head and eyes to look at them. I heard the hand of the clock tick in the room.
Then he smiled and the sharp intakes of breath could be heard throughout the place.
"Hi I'm Fiachra" he stood tall and met the eyes of everyone. It seemed to be only Switch's eyes that could tear themselves away to look at me. Eyebrows furrowing down he began to question me.
"How is-" he started toward me.
"Alright Bub we're off to our room to get settled you've had a long drive and need rest" I swung him up into my arms before meeting the gaze of everyone in the room, "if you don't mind we would appreciate some hours to get ourselves settled back in and have some time together" I didn't wait for a replied. I did what I had learned over the years was the best protection for me, I ran.
