My mom is simply giving me a stare ever since I have came back from the party without even waiting for the cake cutting. Mom went downstairs and came back home as she gave the chocolates to Mrs. Arora. As I saw her leaving the party, I too followed her back to home.
Did I forget to mention that I and Vinnie live in the same apartment? She stays on fourth floor and I am below ground floor in the service quarter.
My mom is not saying anything. I am not saying anything. We are only hearing the tick-tock sound of the wall clock. No one is at home except us. I finally manage to break the silence and ask "What is wrong with you mom? Why are you staring me like this?".
She doesn't wait and begins to speak instantaneously. "How did that person know you?" she asks in a monotonous way.
I gulp. I have nothing to say. What should I answer to this now? How am I supposed to convince her that we are nothing more than friends.
"H-He is my friend" I reply in a lowest voice possible without giving eye to eye contact to mom.
"Why was your phone with him and how he knew your address?" she enquires by narrowing her eyebrows.
Why do every mom have to enquire about everything from their children? Can't she just stay happy that he returned my phone instead of being angry on it and making it a big issue?
I have to lie so as to avoid her long lasting questioning session. I will answer something. She will ask another question. I will answer it and then again she will ask another one and so on.
"I think I had forgotten my phone in the library and he might have found, so he returned" I say without stuttering.
"Really? But how did he know your address?" she asks again.
"L-Library card. He would have checked that in my library card. I have mentioned my address in it" I reply.
I must say sometimes my mother seriously gets on my nerves. It is really irritating to answer to her so many questions.
"Oh that's okay. You thanked him no?" she asks after becoming satisfied of my answer.
"Y-Yes mom of course" I reply with a smile.
"Good" she says and goes inside the kitchen before I interrupt her and ask "Mom..."
She turns behind.
"...why didn't you tell him that you know me because I am your daughter when he asked you about me?" I enquire curiously.
She takes a few minutes to think maybe, and finally answers.
"Because I know that none of your college mates know that you are a doorman's daughter" she replies and goes inside.
I stand there silent. Mom knows that I have hidden my family background from my friends. How did she get to know? And why didn't she scold me for the lie that I have told to all my friends in the college?
I think she understands how much difficult it is to stay with people who do not belong from the same family background as you belong.
