The small pouch of blades glimmered in the afternoon light from her pocket. She held one in hand, but she didn't seem to show any emotion as she stood there blankly, not making a move. We were in a stand-off, it seemed. Her grey eyes were like fog, so you couldn't see beyond the surface. This girl had no emotions.
And the girl threw her knife, missing me by a few feet. But I figured out she wasn't aiming for me or my team when a voice murmured from behind me. "Ketseu..." I turned around, and saw the old woman we'd gotten information from slouched on the ground, clutching her chest, with the butt of the dagger sticking out from between her fingers.
The old woman's husband was shot down too; in a matter of seconds he was laying down beside his wife, still uttering no words at all. The assassin was faster than I could see when the knife hit the old man, she was faster than able to be seen by the naked eye.
And the old couple was dead. As sad as it was, they were gone. Gone forever, the light had faded from their eyes. The husband was holding his wife's hand, and they were both looking up at the sky.
"Why the hell did you do that!?" I shouted. Oh yeah, she's a freaking assassin. That's her job. Idiot! Ketseuki stared at me with those lifeless grey eyes. She was like a heavily-armoured, animated, living corpse.
The assassin stared me square in the eye. "I never cared about them, Ai and Daichi." She didn't even sneak a glimpse at the old couple she had just murdered. "They don't deserve to live."
I had to be careful how I phrased words. One wrong move, and Ketseuki would shoot down me and my whole team. Storm lightly grabbed on to my hand as I held a death stare with the assassin girl. "They made my life hell," Ketseuki spoke again. "So they had to pay. It was laid out for them since the start. It was fate."
"It's not fate..." I muttered irritably. "You can't call that fate!"
Ketseuki's face actually showed emotion for a split second, a singular microsecond, and returned to normal. "You would not understand." She said in a composed tone.
And hell broke loose.
An impossibly fast storm of knives were aimed at us. It was impossible; how could anyone shoot so fast? Storm, Camilla and I dove for cover as Ketseuki put all of her vengefulness into the blades as she threw them. We crouched behind the corner of a nearby building as Ketseu attacked.
Standing up, Camilla gave off a pink aura as she Requipped into Erza's Armadura Fairy armour. "She's stronger than I would have thought." She looked around the corner to get a good view of the assassin. "She has to be a mage. It's impossible for a normal human to throw that fast! And not run out of daggers..."
"Maybe its like gun magic, where you don't run out of bullets?" Storm suggested. "Whatever she is, she's a strong opponent who's going to give us a run for our money." He gave a small sigh of realization after a few moments. "I can't do much against that. I'm a snow mage."
I gave a small laugh. "Don't be that way now. You'll be fine, just don't get killed." Well, maybe you can. I snickered internally as I thought.
"You're right, Nashi!" Storm said, filled with determination all of a sudden. "Now, let's go!"
I frowned. "You go on ahead. I have to do something, I'll be there in a few minutes. Good luck!" I said hurriedly, as the two gave me a confused look. But they went on ahead, and fought so well I was sure they'd win.
I only joined the guild six months ago. And look how far we've come! I'm still a newbie at this; I'm a novice. But I'll one day have magic and determination as strong as them.
"Virgo!" I shouted. I needed fuel for my power, and only the celestial foods could grant it. And a few seconds later, Virgo appeared, holding a piece of fruit with small stars embellished into it. I took a bite, remembering the amazingly magical taste from the last time I had celestial food. And only with one small nibble from it, I felt stronger than ever.
"Thank you, Virgo." I said politely, cracking my knuckles.
Virgo smiled. "Of course, Princess. Now will you punish m--"
"Not right now." I interrupted hurriedly, and sent her back to the celestial world, running out into battle. Storm and Camilla were holding Ketseuki off very nicely -- to think that only a few weeks ago, we were all not speaking to one another, which was all my fault -- they were working as an amazing duo fighting against the enemy.
Make it a trio.
"Star Dragon Roar!" I shouted, the usual explosion of stars erupting from my mouth, knocking Ketseuki off her feet. But when I saw the assassin, she still had that nauseating straight face that showed no emotion, no weakness, no sign of being defeated. She got right back up, and picked up a singular dagger, throwing it.
My heart stopped temporarily as a blade grazed the right side of my head. I felt it, scared, afraid there was going to be a cut. Luckily, only a section of my hair had been cut off by the blade. Ketseuki looked at me for a second, and returned to the knife storm.
Ketseuki was more than a regular person, I knew for sure now. She was a mage, I knew for sure now. "Nashi! Look out!" I heard Storm shout urgently, right as I saw a long, sharp dagger fly in front of my view and embed itself in the flesh...
I looked slowly down at my side, which had the handle of a dagger sticking out... I became light-headed, but more in fury than in blood-loss... I walked towards Ketseuki, ignoring the knifes continuously flying towards me and my team-mates... Storm was shouting at me, as always... I can take care... of... myself...
I jumped up in the air. Fire Dragon's Brilliant Flame, I thought, remembering a move my father had taught me before I'd found my magic power. Of course mine was with stars, but it was powerful nonetheless. I set my hands ablaze with celestial power, and brought them together in a fist, lifting it slowly above my head, and bringing it down on Ketseuki as I fell back to the ground.
The fire burned Ketseuki's face, and she still showed no signs of pain. I remembered the dagger in my side, which I no longer felt. But I could tell blood-loss was kicking in because my head throbbed with each heartbeat. But I kept fighting.
I lunged at Ketseu, not even bothering to use magic at this point. I used my hands and pinned her down by the wrists. "What do you want with me!?" I shouted in her face, which was so sickening, as it was still composed at this point in our fight. Ketseu was the one who'd been hunting me down to kill me... and I had yet to know why.
Ketseuki didn't make a sound. All the knives that had been flying through the air ceased to move, stopping mid-air and falling to the ground with a clink on the pavement.
"What..." I murmured, head feeling light and vision becoming hazy. "What do... what do you... want?"
And the world faded.
