It seems we search for so much in life, thinking we will be satisfied when we achieve the next goal, only to realise that we continue to want something more. There are a few stable things that will create a foundation to achieving genuine happiness. Confidence is right up there on that list. Confidence is not easy to achieve; it is not even something that suddenly appears. It's built upon, piece by piece, as your grow and develop values. In a lot of ways, values and views are synonymous with confidence. To believe in yourself comes from how you perceive the world and your position in it.
Embrace the confidence you were born with: When you first entered the world you probably cried without a second thought about who was watching you. No one else's opinions mattered the slightest; in that moment, your sole focus was your own personal needs. The fear of what people think only developed when you gained the ability to form doubts. Being born with something means that it has a place in the jigsaw of the world; it is an unequivocal part of human nature. You are born with all that you need to thrive; the minimal required when all luxuries are stripped back. The internal confidence you had to make sure you cries were heard will always be with you. Remember that you do not need to learn how to be confident, you need to unlock it and enhance it. You can be confident if you wish. You've proved that since birth.
Trust yourself: Confidence and self trust go hand in hand. In order to trust yourself, you need to realise that not everything is in your control. There are variables that no one can account for, despite how hard they try. Your attitude can always be altered, so make it positive. Not one person knows everything about anything and anything about everything, so what's the issue with making a mistake? Security does not come from knowing it all; it comes from having a willingness to try new things and understanding that a mistake is a learning opportunity in disguise. Be confident in your potential, because if you aren't, then the one certain thing you can control has escaped your grasps.
Take risks: Doing things you have nailed over and over again isn't going to make you feel confident. That's called "playing it safe" and it does nothing but limit your experiences in life. Confidence comes from doing hard things, and doing them well. Overcoming the greatest challenges evokes the greatest sense of pride because you realise how much harder you've had to work. True, a risk may not pay off, but it might also turn out to be the best damn decision you ever made. You won't know unless you try.
Step out of your comfort zone: As mentioned above, doing the same thing continually will not expand your capacity or potential in any way. A comfort zone is only a comfort zone if you have not dared to venture outside of it. Once you make the first step outside the boundaries, the zone expands. That's the thing: there is no such thing as a fixed comfort zone. For some people, this could mean doing a speech in front of hundreds of people. For others, making a new friend could be the challenge we put ourselves up to. Each day, look out for opportunities to do something that sparks some nerves in you. Before dismissing the chance, stop and think of the wonders of overcoming the task at hand. Really push yourself to have a go.
Ask for help: In life, you don't need to face anything alone. You'd be pleasantly surprised by how willing people are to help once they know what you want. It's quite flattering to know someone regards you highly enough to ask for help. If they do happen to say no, then you can find someone else who can help. There is no loss in seeking help.
