Of late there have been many political incidents where people have been discriminated against because of their differences. While this is in no way a political book (those waters are much too murky for me), I definitely feel a big part of life is learning how to appreciate everyone's differences. When you open up to others, you in turn learn more about the world and grow spiritually instead of stagnating. You also open up a world of opportunities, from friendships to work prospects and everything in between. Most people who resist change and are too scared to step outside their comfort zone will find it hard to connect to someone who is very different from themselves. But existing in this simple-minded way is hardly living and experiencing. Just because someone sees something differently to you doesn't mean they are undermining or threatening your own beliefs. If anything, disagreement opens your mind to more possibilities, teaching you more about the way the world works. Challenging yourself is the only way to progress in life, so don't dismiss someone because they are different to you or you don't understand them.
Another misconception seems to be that getting to know people with differing views will mean you lose your own identity. This could not be further from the truth because you can maintain your viewpoints while still respecting that of a stranger. In fact, being able to do this is a life skill and testament to your integrity and character.
It is important to remember that respect is not synonymous to agreement, but is something every human being deserves as a fundamental right. You need to accept that just as you are unique, so is every other person in this world of 7+ billion. Don't forget that communication is also about listening, so before jumping to conclusions, open up and really hear what someone has to say (you might even learn something).
Part of a maturing mind is realising that it's not about convincing someone you are right, but rather a matter of being understood and accepting that you might not often see eye to eye. So please, if you want to make the most from life, then respect everyone, regardless of whether you come from the same country or have the same opinion on a specific issue.
"I stopped focusing on people being different, and I started treating everyone the same way."
