There is no doubt that we all know what it's like when our minds take over and allow unwelcome thoughts to pop into our heads. Our minds are our best friends and greatest enemies all at once. The way you look at the world is the doing of your mind; all that you see is a mirror reflection of the interpretations that occur up in the mind. The myriad of times your mind tries to push away your natural instincts can go unnoticed. Though easier said than done, the key is to control the inside.
Your mind assumes many duties. It's responsible for those thoughts that diminish your confidence and abuse your self-worth. It also takes control for the stress and worrying. There are a few calculated changes you can make to try to pick and choose the things that are worth fretting over.
1) Everyday rituals- Each day, incorporate a range of things that make you happy. Your "happy place" can be achieved through yoga, Netflix, or anything in between. Think about what makes your life worth living-or more pleasant at best-and designate time for these things. This will help you take control of your emotions by tailoring specific activities that you know for sure will make you content.
2) Pursue something that inspires you- If you find inspiration in life, you will have something to turn to when that pesky mind misbehaves. This can be a person that you look up to or a field of study that opens your eyes. Being inspired continues to motivate you, and motivation is the key to success.
3) Remember that you are not your thoughts- The truth is, the inner workings of you organs are 100 times more complex than the process of thinking. Yet, you do not obsess over how your liver or kidneys work. With your thoughts you often say, "I am," giving them a sense of personification. You might think something, but you are not that thing. You need to remember that your thoughts aren't actually who you are in the same way that flu doesn't define you.
4) Speak out- If something bothers you to the point that is becomes an obsession, speaking out is perhaps the best thing to do. You can speak to anyone you please as it is the process of collecting your thoughts that counts. Usually when you express your feelings or thoughts, you get a clearer perspective in your own head. Life is never as bad as it seems.
5) Sleep on it- This may seem contradictory to those who argue that going to sleep unhappy is detrimental, but acting on impulse is a lot worse. What seems like the worst thing in the world might look different once you've had time to relax and recuperate. It's a matter of refraining from obsessing so you can get the whole picture of your problem as opposed to this minuscule view.
6) Music- I have mentioned this previously, but that is only because I fully endorse it as a relaxation method. Music makes us feel. Truly, there are very few things (if any) that make us feel one with ourselves. Part of feeling united with yourself means accepting every part of you. Words that resonate through a melodious voice can be more inspiring than reading words. If you haven't got a playlist that provides comfort, make one as soon as possible.
