On this 5th day of the new year, I have been asked countless times what my New Year's resolutions are. To these questions, I reply, "I don't believe in them."
One friend in particular seem stumped, having taken my words to mean I seek no changes in my life. That assumption is far from the truth, for we all have ways we can grow and improve. Indeed, it might be an interesting concept to some- that I never have resolutions. I will proceed to explain my rationale, and perhaps, if you don't already, you will see the futility of NY resolutions.
A simple of fact of life is that it is ever changing, the good never stays good and the bad can turn into the good. I always look at the ocean as the perfect metaphor for life; unpredictable, yet, in its own way, beautiful. It is with this sentiment that I claim we, as humans, must take all opportunities to evolve and better ourselves. These moments should happen always, not just at the start of each year. Why do we mark the day that we will attempt to strive for great change? This process should be seamless and constant.
So, I guess what I'm saying is that I encourage growth at all times of your life. The hype around new year's, that somehow the mark of a new year means you will become a better version of yourself is untrue. To me, new year's day symbolises new opportunities. But the resolutions- they happen always.
In that light, I am going to share with you three of my goals. These goals are not New Year's goals, I did not create them on New Year's Eve. These have been my goals since October, and they will continue to be until I achieve them.
1. Stand up for yourself even if it means upsetting people.
2. Make 20 new friends
3. Get a job
