Chapter One

*Shane White*

"How about the movies tonight?" Fabian asked me.
"No Fabe, I'm meeting with the girls tonight. Sorry" i reply apologetically. "Maybe tomorrow."
"Nope, I'm interviewing Julian Corrs tomorrow, he's the college football team captain and I need to interview him for the school's magazine. He is going to be on the front cover." he says sadly. "How about i come by your house tomorrow after the interview?"

"Cool. Perfect idea."I say. I had actually come to the library to sketch some new designs but as soon as Fabian sat next to me that was forgotten and we engaged in a lively conversation.

The bell rings signalling it is lunchtime. I pack my stuff and wave at Fabian before leaving the library.
Fabian and I go way back. We've been best friends since like forever. We attended kindergarten together and we were very good friends then, so it was no surprise when we ended up in the same elementary school, middle school, high school and now college. We literally grew up together. I know everything about him and vice versa.
It's still winter here in Atlanta so i tightly hug my books to gather some warmth. Just as I slam my locker shut, now loaded with my sling bag and coat, I see my step brother walk past me laughing at something his girlfriend had said and then my heart flutters.
Shane has been my step brother since last summer. My movie star dad got married to his rock star mum which of course exposed me further to the press and worse made things around complicated. You see, i have this huge crush on Shane and now he's my step brother, its literally impossible for us to be together without causing a global scandal.
My dad has never stuck to one woman after my mum. I think he is still having trouble accepting what my mum did to us just like i am. She left us when i was only ten leaving divorce papers that were signed and approved behind. It was a devastating period for my dad and i. We made the front pages of several gossip magazines. Ever since then, my dad has had millions of girlfriends and tons of wives. I don't think i remember the name of my last mother. They never last a month. So it's quite a surprise and disappointment that my dad and Shane's mum have been married for eight months and they don't seem to be getting divorced anytime soon. I think my dad has finally decided to settle down with her which scares me.
And hurts me too because Shane sees me like a little sister, he ruffles my hair and tickles my sides like i was a five year old instead of eighteen. What hurts the most is seeing him with his girlfriend Jade.
Why won't he notice me? Oh yeah, because I'm not as hot as she is or any of the girlfriends he has ever had. I'm not as curvy either and I'm short. I think i get my looks from my mum because my dad is breath-taking handsome.
Did i mention that Shane is incredibly hot? Oh my. He's got this really dark brown hair that always flicks up at the front and the rest styled to messy perfection. He's stunning dark eyes makes you melt when he gazes at you. He has a chiseled jawline, the cheekiest but brightest smile framing, a perfect set of white teeth and a body you'd imagine was specially carved by a Greek god. You can literally see the outline of his six packs when he wears his tight tops while working out at home.
Anyway, he is what you'd call  a college heart throb or better still THE college heart throb. Girls pretty much throw themselves at him regularly, but he ignores them. If you are Shane's girlfriend, consider yourself a freaking goddess.
"Mitchie, I've been looking everywhere for you. Common, lets go get something to eat." Ayla said walking towards me and snapping me out of my daydream.
"Huh?... oh. Yeah sure" We walked together to the cafeteria. Today they were serving my favorite.
"Beef burger with cheese Mitchelle?" Ms. Pletcher asked, i nodded. Every time it's on the menu, i always have the same thing. I moved along the line once my burger had been wrapped and placed on my tray. I added some chips to my plate and a soda before paying.
"You seemed distracted when i saw you in the hallway. What were you thinking about?" Ayla asked as we made our way to our table where the other girls were already sitting, waiting for us.
"I saw Shane while coming from the library. He was with Jade" i said sadly.
"He's still with her? Wow..... how long have they been dating? three.. four months? The guy really likes her don't you think?"
I was about to lash a snappy comment out to Ellen for hurting my feelings just now, but the sound of a shrill scream interrupted me and made not only me, but everyone else in the cafeteria to turn to the direction were the sound came from.

"How dare you? Stupid girl" Jade screamed again at a little girl who got ice- cream all over her shoe.
"I....I'm....s....so........sowie.... i.... didn't mean....t....to" the little girl said. Her eyes sober with tears, she sobbed hysterically. It only seemed to irritate Jade.
"Oh really? how am i supposed to believe that when you walked right into me. What in the world is a little trouble causing monster like you doing here anyways." Jade literally roared.
Okay someone had to put her in her place. While i still contemplated whether to confront Jade or not. Shane stood up and walked over to his girlfriend.
"That's enough Jade. You really have no shame yelling at a little girl."
Shane said glaring at her. The little girl hugged Shane's legs.
"What..!!?" Jade said in shock.
"I'm sowie sir......" the girl sobbed. "I didn't...... mean to....... i'm not a howwible peerrson..... i just wanted...... some ice-kwim...i'm sowie...".
Shane got down on his knees and hugged the little girl. It was the most touching scene ever.
"It's okay blondie. I know you didn't do it on purpose." he said patting the little girls blonde curls. "Here" he handed her a five dollar bill
"Get yourself another ice-cream" The girl smiled between tears. she thanked Shane before walking away.
"Are you nuts Shane? You literally insulted me in front of that kid. What's wrong with you." Jade barked. Shane stood up and faced her squarely.
"She didn't do it on purpose Jade, get over it."
"What? You're taking her side in this?"
"What am I supposed to do? Support you in making that poor little girl cry?"
"Precisely, I'm your girlfriend Shane."
"Well if that's what you think, i suggest we end this relationship."
