The tingling sound of the monitors filled my ears and woke up all my senses, although my eyes remained close. My hands felt swollen and sore. My body felt completely weak. I didn't like the feel of the environment I was in. It was artificially ventilated. i felt somewhat claustrophobic.

The sounds from the monitors continued to haunt me, so much so I was pushed to finally open my eyes. Slowly, gently, I raised my eyelids. At first, everything was blurry and all I could see was white light. slowly my eyes began to adjust. The white light turned out to be different colors. Blue blinds covered the places where there should have been windows and avoided any form of sunlight from penetrating into the room. There were flowers at the far end of the room on a somewhat table like structure. Monitors filled every corner of the room and right beside me, holding my hand was my mum. She had her face buried in the hospital bed.

Mum!

My throat seemed clogged. I suddenly found it difficult to utter a word.

"Mum" I said faintly, in barely a whisper.

Fortunately she heard me. At the sound of my voice, her face shot up from the bed. her tear stricken face formed a smile of relief as she called out "Nurse! Nurse! She's awake!" She ran out of the ward and instantly i felt the absence of her hand on mine. A few minutes later she reappeared with a nurse who instantly ran to my bedside and took a look at the monitors. She adjusted the little tube that sent the medications straight into my veins on my right hand. On my left hand was another tube sending in blood.

"Welcome back to the land of the living Michelle." the smiling nurse said.

I was till trying to process the meaning of the statement when my mum rushed to my bedside and held my hand again. "Mitchie... Mitchie it's me... It's mum... i promise I'm never going to leave your side again. Not even for a minute." She said, her voice so full of relief that it touched me.

"Where's dad?" i asked faintly, the clog in my throat seemed to only get worse.

"He's outside... we are permitted to see you just one at a time, so when i leave he'll come in." she explained. She placed her other hand on my hair and stroked It's silkiness. "Oh my darling. We were frightened. At the state in which Shane found you, we... we thought we'd loose you" her voice became barely a whisper at the last statement.

Shane had found me! Shane had rescued me.

Shane had saved me.

Shane! The knight in shining amour of my dreams., had indeed been my knight in shining amour .

Questions plagued my mind.

Why had he done it?  Why had he saved me?  Was it because he finally realized his feelings for me? Was it to clear his guilty conscience?  Or was it just out of the goodness of his heart?

 No! Stop!

I couldn't let thoughts of Shane cloud my head. Not again, not ever, I wasn't going to let him get to me again. I'd waited so long for Shane, the wait was over. It was time to move on.

I took one glace at my mum and smiled at her to reassure her that I felt better, even though i was weak to the bone.

"How long was I out?" I asked.

"Three days. The doctors predicted you might not gain consciousness in over a week. I guess they were wrong." she smiled., then slowly the smile faded. "Oh honey, what did they do to you?"

Memories of Jade and Kyle filled my head and caused me to shudder. "It was awful... they were fighting over a knife... it slipped... landed on my thigh... She produced a gun... She shot me... my shoulder hurts.." Like a remote control, I felt the pain on my thigh and shoulder. although they were all covered in blood stained bandages, the bone shattering pain was evident of the horror Jade had put me through.
