*Mitchelle's christmas present*

Christmas carols could be heard all over the house. Shane was helping me put the star at the top of our christms tree. Daina and my dad were handling dinner. Everyone was in great spirits and in a festive mood.

Leo and his mum had ended up going to India. His mum needed surgical therapy and the hospital had recommended they fly out to have it.
I'd seen her before they left. She was a saddening sight. The stroke had taken her ability to speak and move, and she didn't seem to want to continue living. It was hard on Leo and he swore that this christmas was going to be his worst.

Shane and Jade were like cats and dogs. They fought frequently about almost everything. They broke up and made up almost everyday. I couldn't help but think that Jade was just as insecure as Paula had been.

"Tis the season to be jolly" Shane sang.
"Fa la la la la la la la la." I sang along and later on our parents joined.
It was a lovely christmas day; and like us, most of our neighbours were spending it at home.
The weather had been fairly good. It snowed, but not heavily.
In the morning we just played biard games and danced to the carols.
It wasn't until seven in the evening that we all sat down by the tree and opened our presents.

My dad smiled as he handed me what he'd gotten for me. "Merry christmas sweetie."
I excitedly tore off the wrappings and opened the box. It was a new mannequin. I had no idea how he knew i needed one. "I love it dad. Thank you."

Daina opened her present from Shane. It was a new designer belt that matched one of the dresses she had bought earlier on.

Shane opened his present from my dad. It was a ticket to a concert Shane had wanted to go to for a while.

I got a pair of golden studs from Daina, she got an evening gown i designed myself from me. My dad got an expensive wristwatch from me and a blue demin jacket from Shane.

I smiled when Shane handed me the present he'd gotten me. I'd gotten him a hoverboard which he said he loved.

I skillfully unwrapped the box and opened it.
I gasped when i saw what it was. In the jewellery box lay a beautiful silver chain with a heart-shaped ruby pendant that glowed beautifully. Engraved on the pendant was I love you written in calligraphy.
It brought tears to my eyes. And i wished those words on the pendant meant to him what they meant to me.

"Merry christmas." he said and i smiled.

"Ok, i guess it's time James recieves his gift from me." Daina said getting up from were she sat. She glanced at me and i gave her an approving smile before she disappeared into one of the rooms.
She had been working on the song of a while now. I helped her a little with some of the lyrics and she perfected it two days ago. It was all she could think of to give him and i'm glad it was my idea.
"Any idea what she's got in mind?" my dad asked with some childish excitement.
"Wish i knew." Shane said and i simply shrugged.

She came out five minutes later holding a guitar.
"This song is dedicated to just one person." She gazed at my dad with love in her eyes. "That's you James."

She began to sing. It was a lovely song and my dad looked like a teenager as he listened.
At the end of it my dad went over to her and pulled her into his arms and kissed her passionately.
"I have something for you too." he said and handed her a small box. She took it eagerly and unwrapped it.

"What's this?" She asked, bringing out a key from the box.

"Why don't you take a look outside." my dad said mysteriously.
Daina glanced at him suspicously before going to the window. She shrieked when she saw what was there.

"Oh mi God. You bought me a car!" Daina squealed excitedly.

She ran to my dad and threw her arms around him. "Merry christmas honey."

We sat around the dining table and had a feast. Daina had gone all out with the food. We all ate and talked and laughed as we shared memories about things that happened this year and what we expected from the next.

We were in the middle of our dinner when the doorbell rang.
"I'll get it." I said, standing up and heading for the door.

It was the mailman and even in the thick coat he was wearing, he was still shivering in cold. It had already began to snow heavily and cold air washed my face.

"G... good evening... I... I'm asked... t... to deliver this to Miss Mitchelle..."

"That's me."
I glanced down at the box, then back at the mailman. I was going to ask him who it was from, but seeing the state he was in, i decided to offer him some warmth first.

"Why don't you come in for a bit. Looks like you could use a cup of hot chocolate." I offered, moving aside to let him in.

He seemed ecstatic about the idea and his eyes devoured the warmth of the room before him. But to my surprise, he refused the invitation.

"Thanks for the offer Miss, but i have to get back soon. I was asked to deliver this to you personally. Sign here please." He handed me the box.

"You could've delivered it tomorrow you know. Not today of all days." I said, taking the pen from him and signingbwere i was told to.

"I was given strict instructions to have it delivered today." I told me. He closed the book.
I tipped him with a fifty dollar bill which he thanked me for.

"Merry christmas." I said to him as he made his way down the street.

I glanced down at the box in my arms, wondering what it was. I shut the door and headed to the dinningroom with the box in my hand.

"Who was it?" Shane asked.

"The mailman. He came to deliver this to me." I replied distractedly.

"At this hour?" my dad stated and i simply shrugged.

"Who's it from?" Daina asked

"I don't know yet." I replied.

"Well? Aren't you gonna open it?" Shane asked. I could sense he as was curious to know what was in it as i was.
I took a knife from the table and slit the box open.
In it was another box. A smaller one. But this one was wrapped beautifully with christmas wrappings and ribbons.
I stared at it suspiciously and wondered who could have given it to me.
Curiousity got the best of me and i quickly unwrapped the box and opened it.
It was a magnificent ice sculpture of dove with elegant wings.

"It's beautiful." Daina exclaimed and i totally agreed.

"Hey. There's a letter in here." Shane said, taking it out of the bigger box.

"Does it say who it's from?" I asked still admiring the ice sculpture before me.

"Uh-huh." Shane replied, flicking open the card.

"Well? Who's it from?"

Shane looked at me with imperative eyes before he said the words that changed my life forever.

"Your mother."
