"Oh, Laur...what happened to your arm?" Jamie asked her walking into the house.
"There was water on the floor and I fell on it." Lauren told Jamie.
"And that's why you're at your mom's and not your house?" Jamie interrogated her sister in law.
"The house is too big. I didn't want to be there alone for that long." Lauren answered grabbing the bags. "They have a really high fever." Lauren told Jamie.
"Then let's get them to the doctor. Is your arm okay?" Jamie asked.
"It's fine. I could take off all this crap if I wanted to." Lauren said taking Everlee's car seat with the one good hand that she had. They got in the car quietly with Jamie knowing that Lauren wasn't telling the truth. "They are having a lot of fun in New York." Lauren said trying to change the conversation. "I wish I could have gone."
"I know. I think it would have been fun to go." Jamie responded to Lauren's statement in the same flat tone that her husband did when he knew there was something going on.
They continued with the small talk until they got to the doctor's office. Lauren grabbed an awake Everlee who was babbling about nothing in particular while Jamie took Ezra. They neared the door with the chime of door bell into the almost empty office late in the afternoon.
"He broke it." Lauren said as she signed her children into the office.
"What?" Jamie asked shocked.
"He did it last Saturday. We got in a fight." she said sitting down in a chair taking Everlee out of her carrier to hold her feeling her fever.
"We'll talk about it after the appointment." Jamie said in a stern tone reminiscent of Bruno's sternness when they got in a fight.
"Yeah. Alright." Lauren said not paying attention to the conversation.
"Are you ready?" a pudgy friendly nurse in bright scrubs came into the waiting room to gather Lauren and her children. "We just saw you two days ago, didn't we?" she asked.
'For their shots." Lauren said setting Everlee in her lap watching Jamie do the same thing with Ezra who started closing his eyes as he watched his sister smile back at him.
"You just got them their 3 month shots?" Jamie asked.
"Yeah. They got sick after. Oh my god." she gasped. "What if it causes them to be autistic? What if I just changed their whole lives? They aren't getting shots anymore." Lauren said almost jumping out of her chair.
"Oh Lauren..why didn't you say that before?" Jamie asked. "How long were they crying?"
"Like all day." Lauren said. "I got them to sleep a little after feeding the, but most of the day." Lauren said.
"How long is most of the day?" Jamie asked.
"Ummm...like.." she thought to herself. "From like 10 until 3?"
"Laur...I'm not a doctor but I'm going to bet you that it's just the shots. Babies get sick from shots. It happens. It hurts and they can't say anything about it. Did you give them Tylenol before I got to the house?" Jamie asked.
"Yeah. A baby one." Lauren said.
"And they're way quieter than the way Bruno said they were acting when Dre called." Jamie responded.
"Are you sure that's what it was?" Lauren asked feeling like she over reacted.
"It's okay, Lauren. Let's just see what the doctor says and we'll take them home. Just to make sure." Jamie said mimicking the same concern Bruno did in his voice.
