Chapter 5

The Darkness That Found Me

I lay on the bed, my ankles crossed tapping out beats as I listen to music. The music on my phone helps sooth my relaxation that I start thinking of things to say about my cruise on twitter. I look at the chandelier hanging above the table, rocking back and worth a bit. I get up from the bed and walk to the glass door leading out to the docks. I pull the curtains and found out it was raining. The waves moved rapidly against our ship.

"I sure hope this ship doesn't capsize in this condition." I tell myself.

The hallway door bursts open and I jump a bit due to the sound. The sound was from Stephen making out with a woman I'm not familiar with. I don't believe it. Stephen actually brought her here. I also smelled some bitter, burning flavor. Oh... Stephen had his first drink.

"Stephen?" I asked inquisitively.

"Oh hey Brian, sorry about the door." He said while stuttering a bit.

"Is that the woman you told me about? if you don't mind me asking."

"Ah yes it is, this is Veronica. Veronica this my best friend Brian."

"Well hello Brian" she said in a soft British accent while giving me a smirk.

"Pleasure to meet you." I said nervously.

"Shall we take this to my room love." Stephen pulled her close to him.

Veronica jumped onto him wrapping her legs around his waist. They headed upstairs and continued passionately kissing each other. I looked back at the window and laughed a bit.

"Oh Stephen Higgins, you've finally become one lucky man." I told myself.

I returned to bed and continued scrolling through my phone. I started look back at the only photograph I have of Allie. The same picture I looked at from the morning I left home. The last day I hung out with her before the night she was shipwrecked.

I look back at the overall day and remember spending the day at her house before heading over to the grape fields. I remember the smell of the grapes I clipped from the long, yard of vines. The cool breeze that flowed in the air as I sat beside Allie on the dock. The nice, cold water to where our bare feet were soaked in. Nothing could ever beat spending a day enjoying the fruits of nature. No pun intended.

We talked about our dreams and the things we are most passionate about. She discussed about her dream of being a singer one day. I can tell that the more she talked about it, the more I started to see that her dream is something she's most passionate about. That moment is where I realized that I love this person. I love a person who is passionate, strong-willed, empathetic, but most importantly, she has probably the strongest sense of humor. It was a moment where I was about to share the first kiss, but something happened.

Out of nowhere, the ship lets out a massive shake that made it seem like there was an earthquake. I was shaken off the bed and landed back first on to the floor. I got back up and walked off the pain. I ran to the window and see that the deck is in flames. Out in the distance, I see a pair of boats firing at the ship. I jumped out of the way of incoming bullets. I took cover against the bed. I look to my left to see the bedroom door is open. Without hesitation, I ran out and slammed the door.

" Brian, what the hell is happening down there?" Stephen yelled.

" We're under attack!" I shouted. "Come on! We need to get to the lifeboats."

I made my way towards the stairs and saw the woman's red robe laying on the floor. I picked it up and threw it on the floor when I heard...

" Brian! Help!" Stephen shouted out as if he was panicking.
