Chapter 10
The Truth RevealedThe cafeteria was empty before me and the entire camp return. The tables are cleared, the dirty dishes placed in the soapy water, and smell of nature came from the open windows. Grant, Stephen, Albert, Ed, and I gather around the lap top with the flash drive taken from the radio box.
"We have no idea what could be important about this flash drive, but I sure hope It could give us the information we need." Albert said.
"Ok guys, let's learn what is in this drive."Grant told us.
Grant plugs the flash drive into the laptop and it opens a file. Grant moves the mouse to the file and clicks on it. The site brought us to three different video files. Grant pressed the top video with his thumb. The video had cinematography dating back to May of 1945. The crew were US marines. This must have been filmed during the leap frogging missions. The video started off with the men arriving on the island by duck boat. The marines jumps out and searches the area.
The next shot was an explosion of a wooden wall. A battle was fought between the US and the Japanese. The Japanese were outnumbered and retreated further in the jungle. The vegetation of the forest floor was in flames, but the troops managed to put it out with water and wet leaves. The next shot was a construction of a more secure base. The soldiers built everything from the armory, to the cafeteria, and the radio tower.
"Are you guys seeing what I think it's showing us?" I had to ask.
"Sshh I think a commentary is coming up." Ed commanded me.
The soldier looked to the ground and found a glowing stone. The soldier told us that he recently discovered it below the radio tower and had a theory that there could be more like it. Looking over the footage, I realized that it could be the same stone Emmott buried last night. What could I possibly be dealing with here?
The footage continued to roll as the soldier picked up his gun and cuts through the thick jungle. The cameraman follows him through the jungle in search of more glowing stones. My own eyes widen when all of the information is starting to make sense. The stone started to flick like a heart monitor when the bushes started to move. The camera drops the camera and he's being dragged across the forest floor by something. He is seen screaming in terror before the soldier picks up the camera.
The next shot, the soldier runs back to the camp only to find it being nearly destroyed. The food was spilled, the water flowed on the ground, and the flesh of every soldier in the camp is slashed open or torn off. The soldier panics before he is turns with the camera. Out of the bushes, a creature jumped at the soldier and the footage stopped rolling. We look at one another and laid the laptop flat on the table.
"What the hell was that?" Ed asked as if he is scared senseless.
"I don't know." I horrifiedly replied.
"Whatever it was, it must be dead by now." Grant told us. "Let's look through the rest of the footage."
"Are you insane?? We've already learned what could be at stake here. I don't wanna end up getting attacked by that thing in the middle of the night. Please destroy the drive before they catch us with this." Stephen said.
"Stephen, come on man. Look at me. The video was filmed years ago, it could be dead by now," I told him. "How could something like that still be around?"
"If we keep snooping around, we would all be goners." Stephen advised us.
"Don't worry Stephen, they can't track us with the wifi changed on them." Albert reminded him.
"We should continue our search" Grant told us. "There has got to be more information on the drive."
Grant scrolls the mouse down to the next video and clicks on. it. The next video looks contemporary since it is now in color. A construction company found the island, except this looks like the another side of the island. There is a dock that the edge of what appears to be a university. The dock also had a helipad on the top floor. The ship was carrying construction supplies. I looked to my left to see that Ian is looking heartbroken watching the video. Why was he depressed?
The company managed to complete the university and a large town on the other side of the island. The construction of the town took 2-3 years while the university took 6-7 months. Before relocating to another part of the island, the construction workers were attacked by local natives. These were no ordinary natives. From their wardrobe and hunting strategies, they look like they came from the Mayan civilization.
"How did the Mayan's get here?" I thought to myself.
The next shot was a point of view shot where the construction workers were brought to what looked like to the their monastery. The camera shook when the cameraman realized they were brought into a sacrifice to the new leader. The camera was dropped and we all saw Ian Garcia horrified to witness this. We are all shocked to see such a kind-hearted man go through such a horrific event.
"I survived on fruits, deer meat, and man-made filtered water to survive this repugnant island." Ian confessed to us. "I was the only one left from the construction crew."
"How long did you stay here before they captured you?" Albert asked.
"Eight years and 18 days with no hope of escaping the island. I was nothing, but a goddamn coward at the time." He started balling into tears.
"You're not a coward Ian. You've lasted longer than anyone here in this room. With a capacity, as strong as that you can be able to keep moving forward." I told him. "I mean let's face it, you probably know your way around the island."
"It's been four years since I've been in this cage." Ian asked. "If you think that there is a way to escape, then I am willing to help you."
"Thank you." I replied.
"Shall we continue?" Grant asked.
"Yes, we shall." I told him.
I returned to my seat while Garcia joined us. Grant clicked on the last video on the flash drive. The video started off with a man in a black, long, commander coat. He wore a face mask like the mercenaries do except he has a hood like helmet matching his coat. The hood formed a shadow covering his entire face. He sat in a chair in a black, distorted room with a light shining down at him. The man spoke in a Ukrainian language with bright subtitles provided.
"In a time of economic failure, many people have been forced to live below the poverty line. The people struggle to survive in this harsh society." The growling voice over said. "The most repugnant part about it is that you have bosses rejecting them because of labels placed on our records. But who is to blame for such a tragedy. Not ourselves. Not our own friends or family. The true foe of this story are the ones we once viewed as the leaders who we put our trust in."
The video played footage of government officials shutting down the Enigma corporation. The man came up to the camera and stared directly at it. I feel a chilling presence that he is looking at us. He switched languages from Ukrainian to English.
"To all those who are watching, your government officials including your president are nothing more than a bunch of raccoons stealing jobs from the hard working impoverished individuals and sending them overseas. We should know better than to give our trust to a coward who raises barriers on the poor, and lets our families crumble before him. To this, I will not allow it. Join me at the Enigma Corporation, and you will be free from the pain brought upon by the government. To the president, i'll say this. Step down from the Oval Office and turn yourself in for your crimes within 24 hours or every time you don't, your citizens will die starting tonight. I'm a man of my word."
The man gets up from the chair and the mercenaries bring forth one prisoner. He puts out his staff and three, sharp prongs shoot out from one side of it. He impales the prisoner with all three prongs and pulls the trident up. The man splits the man into three pieces before the camera fades out. The screen goes back to the newsfeed and the video stopped playing. My mind was blown to find the truth about why everyone is put here. It wasn't because the man wants us to show teamwork, or form a group. We are in line for a public execution. From seeing this realization, I have to get the hell out of here.
