Chapter 19
The Last Of The Yaxchilán
We walked for five minutes of endless tunnels. Allie's torch was starting to die and the batteries of the flash lights is starting to run low. Marvina continues to lead the wall through the light up ahead. The formation was starting to get ridged as each of us took another step. All of the sudden, the ground was starting to elevate. I started to feel my feet start to slip on the wet terrain. We carefully start to walk downwards by walking along the sides.
This idea proved to be ineffective when Ed slips from the top. When Ed starts sliding down the tunnel, everyone starts to fall like dominoes as we lose our footing. The tunnels turned into a rocky slide with only an outside light giving way. We start to see water coming from the slippery floor. Up ahead, the light gets bigger and bigger until I feel the air rushing through every part of my body. I am flailing down into a large pool of pond water below. The landing stung like a swarm of bees all over my body. The stinging pain fades away as I swamp to the surface.
I catch my breath and looked around for dry land. I see a dirt road with a hill of grass ahead where Marvina, Allie, and Kacela are climbing from. I started to swim to their location when I see Ed flailing down hard into the pond. He lands in the water back first and I felt the pain in his back. I continued swimming to dry land and Allie pulls me up. Ed washes up to the surface and starts swimming to us. As soon as Ed got here, I helped pull him up from the water.
"Are you alright?" I asked Ed.
"Other than my back stinging from the landing? I'm fine," he replied.
"Next time, be careful where you step," I advised.
"Thanks for the tip," He responded. "Gee where are we?"
"Over here!" Marvina called out.
We ran to her location which was a few feet down the dirt road. She was standing near a forest of tall trees with vines. Up ahead was a very dense fog that is impossible to see through. We come to her location and looked at the fog. We all thought about what could be on the other side of this fog. There was only one way to find out. We started walking into the fog. The fog consumes us with uncertainty of what could be our untimely demise. We looked around the area and we hear nothing, but our own footsteps. As the fog fades away, we see an ancient marvel.
We have found the Mayan city. The same city I've seen from the footage filmed on the flash drive. The city was a mile wide and long. Surrounding the entire city was wall standing forty foot wall. Inside the city are three pyramids that stand so high that it could greet the Mayan gods. I come close to the wall and touched it to see its architecture first hand. The stone work had intricate carvings that tells a story. It looks like nature hasn't touched this place. I walk toward the entrance that are guarded by two tall stucco statues of the death God, Cizin.
"Um Brian, are you sure this is even a good idea?" Allie advised.
"I'm sure they wouldn't mind having a little chat." I commented.
"And if they don't?" Kacela asked.
"Then we'll have to compete to the death," I replied.
We walk around the corner to see a 38 foot gateway. We walk through the door and I couldn't believe it with my own eyes. The city still intact after hundreds of years. The city was filled with life with people wondering around doing some shopping. The men wore loin clothes with differently colored body paint from head to toe. Some of the men wore jewelry, some are more strange looking than others. The females shared similar body paint, but they wore colorful dresses.
