Chapter 27
The Face-Off
I drive through the darkness of the thick jungle. The head lights shine down the dirt road we are riding down. The GPS is leading me back to the university. The map has been kind of glitchy ever since we destroyed the Enigma Corporations base. It's one of the down sides of taking them down I have experienced so far. I turn to see Allie is looking out the window with my right hand being held by her.
"Hey, can you do me a favor?" I asked.
"Sure," She replied.
"In my backpack, my phone is in there," I inform her. "I set a timer for the chopper to arrive, can you check it for me?"
Allie nods her head in approval and grabs my backpack from her feet to pull it into her lap. She unzips it and starts digging in my bag. In a few seconds, she manages to find my phone in the small pocket in my backpack. When she pulls out my phone, she tries to access it, but she is unable to due to my phone being protected by the thumb scanner. I press my thumb on the scanner and it unlocked it for her. She presses on the timer app and she looks at the time presented before her.
"We have an hour and twenty minutes left," She informs me.
"An hour and twenty minutes?" I asked. "Wow, I thought it took longer to get there, but we are right on schedule."
"We're going home," She says with a smile.
Driving on the road at this moment feels kind of strange seeing that none of the mercenaries are on patrol anymore. Up ahead, we see the bridge up ahead and drove right across it to the southern part of the island. She takes my phone off of the timer app and starts to look through my old photos. I turn to my left to see that she is looking through the old photographs on my phone. There was only fifty three photos I've taken on my phone. When she sees the photograph of us, she smiles with tears on her eyes.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"Looking back at this, it feels like it was a hundred years ago," Allie tells me. "God knows what could be down the road for me when we get back. You know if you hadn't come here, this place would've driven me to the brink. To the point where any hope of rescue is pointless and my own death being the only way out. But you did. And because you are here, I was able to bring myself back."
"Do you remember that night, when you snuck over to my home when my brother went missing?" I asked.
"I do. We spent the entire night by the fire place and cuddled until we got busted the next morning," She laughed. " I'm surprised you still remember that."
"You cared for me like nobody has ever cared for me before," I tell her. "It was a day where I fell in love with you. A day doesn't go by when I think about the many ways to repay you for such kindness. When we get back, my parents will definitely let you stay with me."
"You sound so certain," She said.
"That's because I would do the same," I tell her.
Allie comes up to me and plants a kiss on my cheek for my generosity. I turn back to her with a warm feeling in my cheeks and my blushes become more obvious. As I drive along the dirt path, an alarm goes off in the truck. The truck starts slowing down and comes to an unscheduled stop. I look at the engine monitor and it turns out to be low on power. I hear a loud banging sound of the metal wall followed by Daric yelling something. Allie slips the door open and Daric is looking at us through the window.
"Oi! Where the bloody hell are we?" Daric asked. "Why are we stopped?"
"I think we ran out of juice," I replied.
