I was panicking to make everything perfect this evening. I checked my phone for the time as I walked to the door to wait for her. She should be here any time now. Knock, knock, knock. I didn't want to seem weird so I waited a minute before opening the door.
I smile at her "Hey. Come in. Dinner's almost ready." I turned back toward the kitchen expecting her to follow. "So, how are you liking L.A?" I said urging myself to start a conversation. She giggled and said "It's alright. It's nothing like Michigan." Alright. I learned something new about her. "What is it like in Michigan?"
"Well, I lived in a small town, White Cloud. We didn't have much. There weren't so many people. I knew almost everybody who lived in the town and the next two towns over." She said and smiled and laughed. I smiled back and turned back to the stove that ad a pot of green beans and a pan of mashed potatoes and a pan with a raw steak in it. "Make yourself at home." I said and she smiled again and placed herself at a bar stool next to the counter.
She pulled out her phone and began texting someone. What if it was a guy? Does she have a boyfriend? Maybe she is married! I stole a quick glance at her hands to see if I could spot a ring. There wasn't one there.
I continued to cook stealing glances at her every few seconds. She put her phone away and was watching me silently. "Done" I say when I finish the steaks. "Wanna eat here or the table?" and she shrugged. I decided I was feeling too lazy to take everything to the dining room so I put a plate of food in front of her and sat to enjoy my own meal.
After she has finished eating her green beans and mashed potatoes she stares at the steak for a moment before I pull her out of her tance and say "How is moving going?" She looks up at me and shrugs. "You don't talk much do you?" She blushed "Sorry." she says looking upset. "Is something bothering you?" I ask and she looks at her plate again. "What is it? You can tell me anything." I smile sweetly. "I'm a vegetarian." I laugh. "Why didn't you just say so? Are you still hungry? I can make you something else." She shakes her head and says "No. That's alright." I smile apologetically.
"Wine?" I ask and set two glasses down assuming she will say yes. She looks up from her lap and smiles "Why not?" I laugh at how carefree she sounds and fill up both glasses. We pick up the glasses and clink the together before taking a sip.
"How old are you?" She asks. I am genuinely surprised that she has asked me a question. "37. You?" I smile warmly. "32" She responds. "What do you do for a living?" She asks. "I make YouTube videos with my lifelong best friend. You?" I smile genuinely interested in what she does. "I don't have a job." She said and looked down in embarrassment. "Well, what do you do?" I asked. She shrugged, took a sip of wine, and said "I don't do anything.
I sighed and grabbed a pen and sticky note off the counter next to me. I scribbled down the address of the studio and my phone number and handed it over to her. "Come see me tomorrow. Just give me a call before you do." She takes a minute reading the note "What for?" she says examining it again. "A job, silly." I said and laughed a bit. She looked down again and blushed. "You don't have to do that." she said. "No. I don't. I want to though." she smiled.
"Thanks. I better get going." She said. "Alright. See you tomorrow?" I asked. I wanted another chance to learn more about her. She nodded and got up. She walked to the door and I followed her to say goodnight. She opened the door and turned toward me. "Thanks for dinner." She said. "No problem. It was my pleasure." I shrugged and pushed my glasses up a little on my face. She looked into my eyes and I leaned in to kiss her. My eyes were closed so I didn't know she backed up and all I heard was her say "I can't." Before taking off in tears.
I didn't know what to do. A woman just burst into tears because I tried to kiss her. That doesn't usually happen. Then again, I was married and people who are married don't do that to each other. Maybe she has a reason. There has to be a reason. I have to find out.
