Midnight Worries

***Link***

     I lay awake with Jaden in my arms for hours that night. I was having such a hard time wrapping my head around the idea that he abused her. He beat her and made her leave. He made her feel unsafe. I felt like I should do something about it but there wasn't anything I could do. 

     I carefully replaced my chest with a pillow as I rolled out from under Jaden. She groaned a little and I checked the time. Almost four in the morning. I walked down the stairs to the kitchen to get a glass of water. After I filled it and took a few sips someone said "Link? What are you doing? It's four in the morning." I turned to see Emma standing wrapped in a bathrobe. 

     "I couldn't sleep." I said and she nodded. "Me neither. Why couldn't you sleep?" I sighed and thought about what to say. "Well, Jaden told me something and it's really bothering me." She nodded, "What'd she tell you? You don't have to tell me if you don't want, but maybe I can help." She pulled out a chair at the table and sat. I sat across from her and sighed at my dilema. "She told me about Jack and what he did to her. I feel like I should do something about it." 

     "Oh." Was all she said at first. "How long have you two been together?" She asked. What kind of question was that? I was having a serious problem and she wanted to know about my relationship. "Well she moved to L.A. in May, and now it's September, so about four months." I smiled. 

     "You're lucky. She doesn't let anyone in after four months. She really loves you Link. Don't screw it up." She said and got up and left. Wow! She didn't even help me! At all!

***Jaden***

     Link was moving and it woke me up. I didn't want him to think he woke me up so I pretended to stay asleep. I wonder what he's doing. Maybe he has to go to the bathroom. He'll be back in a minute. The door opened and closed and I sat up. 

     I sat there for probably five minutes before the door opened again and Link walked in. I smiled at him and he didn't smile back. Concern bubbled up for him. Why was he upset? Did I do something? He sat down the edge of the bed and I wrapped my arms around him and placed my head on his shoulder. I leaned my head on his and asked, "what's wrong, babe?" He sighed and softly pushed me off of him and crawled under the blankets and faced away from me. 

     I crawled under the blanket and stared at the ceiling and after a few minutes he rolled toward me and said "I love you." I smiled but was still concerned. "I love you too." I said and he stroked my cheek. "I love you more." I laughed and kissed his cheek. "I love you most." He smiled and laughed a little. He wrapped his arms around me. I nuzzled his neck softly. He rubbed circles on my back and kissed the top of my head. Maybe nothing was wrong. Maybe he was just tired. I hoped so.

     I knew Jaden was worried I was upset especially when I didn't face her in the bed. I rolled over and said "I love you." and she smiled and replied, "I love you too." I caressed her cheek gently and said "I love you more." She giggled a little and kissed my cheek. I thought I had mostly wiped her clean of concern so I laughed and said "I love you most." I wrapped my arms around her to pull her a bit closer. I started rubbing small circles on her back with my hand and kissed the top of her head as she nuzzled my neck.
