A Little Bit of Vodka Won't Hurt

The strike of Jaden's hand stayed stinging my cheek and the astounding wonder left me dumbfounded. I just stood there like an idiot. I stared at Jaden as she walked out but I didn't stop her. She got her phone and I saw her keys on the hook by the door and knew she'd be back in a second to get them. I stared at the wall thinking about what to say to her when she came to get her keys and the door opened. Jaden grabbed her keys and I stared at the wall.

I can't depict my own feelings as to what had went down but I think I am angry. I know I'm confused. The stinging began to go away and I put my had up to my cheek. I went up to the bathroom to see if there was a mark and sure enough there was a white hand print surrounded by red on my cheek. I took of my glasses and turned on the cold water in the sink and splashed a little on my face and wiped it off with a towel and the hand was still there.

I went back down stairs and got down a glass and opened the freezer. I knew I had some vodka in there. I went to pour a glass and decided against it and took a swing out of the full bottle. It burned going down but it made me feel better.

After a few hours I had finished the bottle and was drunk. I picked up my phone and called Jaden. She didn't answer, so I left a voicemail.

"Jaden," I slurred, "I made out with Christy while we were having coffee today. I didn't mean to but I felt so bad for her. I love you, Jaden. Please call me." I went to hang up and dropped my phone, "Fuck," I reached down and grabbed my phone and hung up.

I went to take a drink out of the bottle and realized it was empty and got up and went to the freezer to find more. "God damn it," I slammed the freezer door and got my keys from the hook and started towards the nearest store.

A Thousand Years by Christina Perri started playing from my phone and I knew it was Link calling me at almost midnight. I ignored the call and took another sip of the glass of wine I was drinking and Lizzie said "was that him?" I nodded and watched my phone carefully as I continued to tell Lizzie what happened.

As I was finishing up, Lizzie wanted to go to bed because we had work in the morning. I nodded and picked my phone up off the table. It was about half after twelve and I was ready for bed too. Lizzie made the couch for me to sleep on and I sat down and checked my phone. Link left a voicemail.

"Jaden," I could tell he wasn't sober, "I made out with Christy while we were having coffee today. I didn't mean to but I felt so bad for her. I love you, Jaden. Please call me," There was a pause and a loud thud and a muffled "fuck" then it hung up. I put my phone down and covered my mouth I started crying and Lizzie must've heard because she opened her bedroom door and came over and sat down and wrapped her arm around me.

My phone rang and it said 'unknown number'. I picked it up because it was a local number and said "hello?"

Link's familiar voice said "hey. I need some help." He sounded a little more sober than the voicemail.

"Why don't you call your other girlfriend?" I scoffed and continued, "maybe you could hook up with her again. And speaking of, who's phone are you calling me from?"

"I'm in jail." He sighed.

"What makes you think I'm going to help you?"

"Because you love me. Don't you? If not, I need you to tell me."

"What are you there for?"

"Drinking and driving."

I laughed and said "You idiot," I shook my head, "I'll be there in a little bit."

I hung up and stood up and went to the door and started getting on my shoes and Lizzie said "where are you going?"

I grabbed my keys and said "Link needs some help. He is my fiance after all."

"Well, I'm coming with you." She said and grabbed her jacket and shoes.

"No. I'd rather you didn't," I said and took her jacket from her hands and put it on the rack and took her shoes and put them on the floor, "I need you to understand. I need to talk to Link alone." I smiled.

She nodded and said "Alright. Just try to keep yourself under control and not hit him. Okay?" And hugged me.
