Chapter Twelve

I had been working nights at the hospital and was comforted to know that Esme had Edward and that Edward was safe. He didn't start private high school again. There was no point. It had been two years since he had left and he would have graduated by now. This also meant that we would probably have to leave soon. Where? I had no idea. Esme and Edward took to planning and I planned with them during the day. I also planned with Edward about how to propose to Esme and turn our courtship into something more. Finally the plan was set. Edward took Esme out to go clothes shopping which left me to arrange the house. I set up white and pink fairy lights around the trees surrounding our house then wrapped the banister in a set of pink ones. I scattered rose petals from the door to the living room where I sprinkled the petals into a heart shape around me. I then waited.

I heard Edward telling Esme to leave the bags outside for now. He kissed her cheek and wished her a good night. I got in the correct position with one knee bent and the other supporting me. In my hands was the box.

Esme stepped into the family room, her hands on her face in her surprise.

"Carlisle?" She squeaked. I smiled.

"Marry me, Esme. Be my wife. Will you do me the honours?" Esme ran at me, tackling me to the floor. I toppled over and lay on my back on the floor with her lying on top of me.

"Yes... Oh yes I will!" Esme kissed me, her hands on either side of my face. I kissed her back, wrapping my arms around her body.

"I love you so much, my darling..." I whispered.

"I love you too..." She whispered back. I sat up and Esme sat on my lap, her legs either side of me. I took the ring from the cushioned box and placed it on the third finger on her left hand. She looked at it, a beautiful smile spread across her face.

"Do you like it?" I asked her.

"I love it..." She replied. She kissed me again. I kissed her back but we broke away when Edward burst in.

"Who wants to celebrate?!" He laughed, holding a bottle of what looked like champagne.

"Champagne?" Esme slid off my lap and stood up and I stood beside her, taking her hand and linking our fingers.

"Nah, I tipped THAT stuff out." Edward laughed and put three glasses on the window sill, pouring animal blood into each.

"Edward!" I laughed. I loved my son's spontaneous side and the way he tried acting as human as normal but added his own vampire twist to things. He had come up with the idea that we were vegetarian vampires, living on a substance that kept us strong but not fully satisfied.

Edward shrugged cheerfully and handed us each a glass of animal blood. We toasted to happy beginnings and drained our glasses. We continued to celebrate throughout the day until it was late enough for me to leave for work.
