Chapter Twenty-Four

After Emmett had hunted, we explained a bit more about our vampire ways and he was willing to go through with it.

"So how come you were getting attacked?" Edward asked. He was leaning against the wall of the family room, looking at Rosalie and Emmett who were sat together on the couch.

"I used to bring food home for my family... And I worked at a railroad with my brothers."

"Will they miss you?" Emmett smiled sadly.

"Yeah... But my older brothers will take care of my mother and sister."

"You realise you can never see them again?" I warned him.

"I know... But they'll be okay." Emmett bit his lip slightly.

"Are you prepared to do this?" I checked.

"It won't be easy. Hunting animals instead of humans and learning to be around humans without diving on them and drinking their blood. Learning to control your cravings." Edward added.

"So it will be hell... Right?" I was confused at Emmett's euphoric tone.

"Yes... But we'll be here to support you." Rosalie told him, taking one of his hands in both of hers. Emmett looked back at her, smiling.

"Hell's not so bad if you get to keep an angel with you." Rosalie smiled too. She then looked to me.

"What would you have done if I had said that I wanted to save him?"

"Still given him morphine and still bitten him." I replied.

"Why morphine?" Edward's brow furrowed in his confusion.

"Why would you still have bitten him?" Esme asked.

"I would have given the morphine because I've been testing the theory that morphine could help with the pain that comes with the transformation of becoming a vampire. And I would have still bitten him because not only had Rosalie ran miles to bring this man to me, I saw her face and I knew that he was going to die if I didn't do something..."

"It must have been over a hundred miles?" Esme asked Rosalie, eyes wide in awe.

"Yes..." Rose nodded. "It took all my strength to not kill him..."

"Why didn't you just do it?" Edward asked.

"I didn't want to lose control and kill him... I knew Carlisle could transform him and not harm him like I could..." She whispered. Her eyes were far away and distant as she remembered.

"All I can really remember is this angelic girl. It was like... I was being saved by an angel who brought me to God..." Emmett's voice was very quiet. I smiled.

"I've been called many things before but God is not one of them." I laughed and everyone else joined in.

"So why didn't the morphine work?" Edward asked.

"I guess it's because the venom burnt ahead of the medicine. It didn't have time to run through the bloodstream." I shrugged.

"So morphine won't work?"

"Maybe it will. Maybe the morphine just needs more time to spread." Edward and I continued to talk theories throughout the day until it was late enough to call it time and so I had to leave for my shift at the hospital.
