Chapter Ten

I kept my promise and did one step at a time. We went out on miniature dates. I took her for private picnics at the beach and at parks. Of course these could only happen during night or somewhere that no one would ever find us. And they were hardly picnics but we were spending time together and that was what counted.

I took her to the pictures eventually. The pictures were a completely new thing and an exciting one too. It was a new experience and although she was worried about going and being around plenty of humans, she enjoyed herself and so did I.

I took her for walks around parks and gardens. We talked about everything. Esme told me about her former life as a human. The arranged marriage of herself and Charles. The job as a school teacher and her hilarious, mischievous childhood. We held hands and occasionally hugged. Sometimes I would kiss her forehead or her hair, her hand or some other part of her but I was always careful never to push her too far.

"You know... You haven't kissed me for a while." Esme and I were walking around a garden at night. The stars were out but no moon and there was a slight breeze. The garden had a fountain set in the middle of it and Esme sat on the bench in front of it. She pulled me down beside her.

"I told you that I would go at your pace." Esme looked at me with bright, golden eyes. I looked back at her.

"What if I wanted to now?" I hesitated briefly before answering.

"Then that's your decision."

"But would you want to?" I looked at the fountain, not able to show her my smile.

"I always want to." Esme put her hand against my cheek, cradling my face. I looked back at her.

"Then why wait?" She leaned in and kissed me before I could respond. Clearly it had been meant as a rhetorical question. I kissed her back. I moved to put my hands on her waist and to pull her closer. She moved to lock her hands around my neck, tangling her fingers in my hair. We continued to kiss for some time and then eventually the kiss was broken but we remained in the same position.

"I love you..." She murmured.

"As I love you..." I whispered back. And as I said it, I knew I meant it.
