Chapter Twenty-Two

The next day after we had come back; Edward was playing tunes on the piano, Esme was sketching and I was reading one of my books. Suddenly the front door burst open and all of us jumped to our feet, in shock.

"Carlisle! Help me!" Rosalie's voice screamed. I dropped my book and ran to her side. She was carrying a human male in her arms. He was an extremely buff young man, no older than me. He was also rather good looking but had a very innocent look about him. But even I could hear his pulse was fading, his breathing ragged.

"Upstairs." I ran up the stairs in front of Rose, to my study. I cleared my desk of books and paperwork, grabbing my doctor's bag.

Rosalie lay the man down on the desk and I had a proper look at his face. He had deep scratch marks from temple to chin. His clothing was tattered and there was not an inch of his skin that wasn't bruised or cut.

"What on Earth happened to him?" I gasped.

"Mauled by a bear," Rosalie was shaking. I pulled out a needle of morphine and injected him straight into his bloodstream. I reached into my bag for another needle when Rosalie took my arm to stop me. "I don't want you to save him." I felt very confused.

"Then what...?"

"Transform him," Rosalie looked at me with pleading eyes. "Please... Before it's too late."

"Are you sure?" I moved back to the man.

"Yes. Please. Do it. Now." I bit into the man. He grunted in pain but I didn't stop. I bit him in his wrists, ankles and throat. I wanted to seal the wounds but knew I couldn't due to possible infection. The venom would kill any possible chance of infection anyway. The man continued to gasp and grunt in agony. He writhed in pain.

"Who is this?" I asked Rosalie once I was sure the venom was in his bloodstream.

"I... I don't know. He doesn't have a name on him."

"Then why did you save him?" Rosalie looked down at the man's face. I did too.

"Because there's something about him... Something I've fallen for." I understood what she meant when I saw her facial expression. She had the same look in her eyes that Esme had when she looked at me. Love.

"Okay but he's your responsibility." I warned her. She nodded.

"I'll take care of him..." She took his hand with one hand and stroked his hair with her other hand. I sat at my desk and talked to the man.

"My daughter, Rosalie saved you. You're going to be okay. The pain will stop soon... I promise." The male grunted and groaned.

"His name's Emmett. Emmett McCarty." Edward was leaning against the doorframe, looking at the scene before him.

"Where did he come from, Rose?" I asked her.

"Gatlinburg..." She whispered. Edward and I stared at her.

"What were you doing up there?" I asked, surprised.

"I wanted a wider hunting range... It's known forbears." Rosalie shook her head and buried her head in Emmett's arm. She wasn'tshaking now but she still seemed to be in a state of shock. There was nothingmuch I could do for her...
