CLAIRE'S POV
As we entered the breakfast hall, I immediately spotted Karen with Olivia. "There they are", Owen said pointing to them. I bit my lip to prevent myself from throwing a sharp sarcastic comment at him. I sat down next to Karen and held my arms out like a child begging for their toy back. I thought as soon as I got Olivia back I would relax. How wrong I was. "Errm, what's going on?", I asked adjusting Olivia on my lap. Everyone exchanged glances urging someone to speak. Even Zach and Gray were included, this worries me. I shot a deadly glare at Owen because if he had forgotten to tell me something again. God help him. I could tell Owen's brain was working overtime. My face soften as I came to the realisation that he knew as much as me.
"Well, errm", Karen began rather cautiously. I was known for having a short temper in my family. I was especially unreasonable if it affected my plans. Being stubborn was also in the long list of Claire's Amazing Traits that Owen doesn't need to know about. So if Karen was about to go ruin my next plan, which just so happens to be my wedding. Let's just say things won't go down well."We know you said you wanted a small wedding but I decided you would probably want more guests so I took it upon myself to invite more people for you", Karen spoke without taking a single breath and flashed a smile at the end. I just stared at her for minute. My brain was assessing the situation. I had a baby on my lap and was in a room with a lot of other people. No loud outbursts. There are young kids need by and Owen's parents are at the table. No swearing. "Well, errm, I. Okay who did you invite?", I asked calmly. I handed Olivia to Owen. "Who?!", I asked again raising my voice. "Quite a few, and if you want specific. Just look behind you", Karen replied whilst smiling at whoever was behind me. I rush of panic came over me. I was not one bit prepared to turn around. I was praying that it's only one person because I couldn't handle my hold contacts list. Suck it up Claire. I took a deep breath and turned around.
"Hey", he smirked at me. "Oh My Gosh!!!", I squealed as I threw myself around the man who was standing behind me.OWEN'S POV
"I can't believe it. It's been so long, too long", Claire smiled at the man. I still had no idea who this guy was. "I know, I know. So, C, are you going to introduce me to everyone?", he spoke coolly. C!!!??? What the hell!!! "Well, you know Karen and my parents", Claire said bashfully. "That's Scott her husband and their two children Zach and Gray", she continued. I didn't know whether I should be worried about Claire's sudden mood change. I am used to it but this, this is, well. Different. "And this is my fiancé Owen and our daughter Olivia", Claire said still smiling. "Everyone meet E. I mean Everett. Everett Sloan", She added sheepishly.
"Please, call me Sloan", E said flashing his sparkling white teeth. Sloan was tall with a slim but muscular build. His facial structure was defined amongst his tidy facial hair. Sloan has dusty blue eyes and ash coloured hair. I did my best to fake a smile. I knew I wasn't going to like this guy. Claire sat down again, which relieved me because that would mean that E would have to leave. "Oh, we don't have a chair for", Claire said apologetically. "It fine", he answered. Sloan signalled a waiter, who immediately brought him a chair. "You don't mind if I join you, do you?", He asked once he had sat down. I had to restrain myself from making a sarcastic comment. Claire has rubbed off on me. "So how do you know my Mom and Aunt Claire", Gray asked looking up from his DS. "Well, Gray. I lived next-door but if you ask your grandparents, they'll say I spent more time in their house than my own", Sloan joked. Throughout breakfast the whole conversation seemed to revolve around Sloan. I found out that he and Claire were best friends when they were younger. They also dated in high school but that didn't effect their friendship. As C put it, 'they were inseparable'. It also became clear that he was single. He must of said it about 10 times!! What was the point, all the women at the table are or will be married by the next day. But to be fair to him, Sloan was a very interesting guy but it didn't help the fact that I've never even had Claire mention his name before. Like ever. She had told me about her previous boyfriends and friends from high school, but not a single word about Everett. "It's been nice to catch up, I have to go unpack. See you guys around", Sloan smiled before excusing himself and leaving.
We all dispersed from the table. Karen had promised she'd speak to Claire later about the rest of guests and various other wedding plans. Claire and I had gone back to our suite. I was not at all happy with Karen and her surprise guests. Especially Everett Sloan. Claire on the other hand was practically skipping out the elevator. I put Olivia down for her nap before changing into a plain t-shirt and shorts. I was planning to go to the gym, hopefully that way I won't bump into Sloan. Claire was spread out on couch flicking through the channels on the T.V. "Owen, could you grab me a soda please", Claire called out. "Sure thing, C. What flavour do you want?", I replied, my voice was dry with sarcasm. I opened the shiny fridge and looked back other to Claire. She had sat up so just her head was showing over the top of the sofa. Claire's eyebrows were furrowed, her blue eyes were sharp and her face became difficult to read.
"What!? Am I not allowed to call you C?", I said innocently. "Don't act all innocent, you know exactly what!!! And it's not going to work on me!!", Claire's tone was as sharp as her eyes. "Well C, I just wanna know why I've never heard of Everett!", I snapped back. I slammed the fridge door, forgetting about the sodas in my anger. "You never told me about every girl you dated!! Sorry if I left out one guy!!", she cried jumping off the couch. "But he's obviously important to you and you left him out in every conversation we've had!", I answered lowering my voice slightly. "Like you weren't very open when we first got together!!!", Claire defended with her eyes threatening tears. "I didn't dodge every question like a bullet!!! He was your best friend!! He was your boyfriend!! And most probably the guy who took your virginity!!!", I shouted forgetting that Olivia was asleep in the next room. "That's none your business!!! You never mentioned anything about losing yours!!", the crack in Claire's voice was clear as tears spilled out of her eyes. "It is my business!!! I'm your fiancé!!! What's mine is yours, what's yours is mi...", I shouted but was cut of by my wailing daughter.
I just stopped and looked at Claire. There was silence between us but it was louder than ever. "Claire", I breathed as I stepped forwards. I gently lifted her chin to try and get her to look at me. She refused. "I'll see to Olivia", Claire's voice was expressionless as she turned around. "Claire, wait. I'm sorry", I whispered. "Just go", Claire sighed. I grabbed my gym bag and put my trainers on and left without another word. "ARGH!!", I screamed once in the elevator. Idiot, idiot, idiot. Complete idiot. "I've ruined it. How many people do you know who have gotten married and had an argument the day before", I said quietly to myself. Why do I destroy everything that's good in my life???
