Prologue:
“All students are to evacuate the school immediately, no questions asked” it closed off and everyone stood around confused. They looked at me again with a questioning look upon their faces. I turned away, I already felt scared and embarrassed I didn’t need some of the most popular students to lower my self esteem by laughing at me because of something I said.
“What happened?” Cameron asked from the centre of the room “Kathryn please fill us in on the details!” he walked towards me. I quaked in my shoes as both Cameron and Alistair advanced on me. Megan was stood by me pulling her bag on her shoulder. I grabbed her by the elbow and ran out the door. It felt odd, I had only just got to school and then we are sent home because of a Zombie problem. I rummaged around in the bottom of my bag for my phone, it wasn’t there! I looked in the outer pocket and it wasn’t there. I felt terrified, how am I supposed to phone home or the police if I’m attacked? I breathed deep letting the cool air rush to my brain. I let my right arm drop to my side; it hit something hard and square-ish in my pocket. I pulled it out and realised it was my phone I sighed with relief.
I flicked on the screen to see a message, it was from Dylan. I read it: meet me by the green gate outside school. I understood instantly what he was trying to tell me. I flicked off the screen again saving as much power as I could for the rest of the day. I continued walking through the double doors at the end of the corridor to the play ground. “Is it okay if we walk with Dylan?” I asked quietly; I was paranoid about meeting another one of the flesh eating corpses.
“Fine” she stropped as if seeing him tonight was enough for one day. I wanted to tell her about ‘it’ but I thought better of it. She would probably laugh in my face and say I was being stupid or she would laugh in my face and ask to see it. And in both circumstances I don’t want either. I edge away from her by a few centimetres, not far, before she closes the gap again. “Are you trying to avoid me or somethin’” her voice was angry as usual however it was an anger that only happens when she is that angry, that hardly ever happens.
“No I just wanted some room to... erm... think?” I said in a questioning tone. Why am I such an idiot, even though I’m not? She didn’t bother answering as usual since she started to get dates, boyfriends and more break ups than imaginable than I do but at least when I am asked I will either spare their feelings or agree because I want to not for the heck of having a boyfriend. Knowing her she would agree if the worst boy in the school asked her out. She is that bad! But she is my friend and I can get over it.
“Seriously Kat, Are you avoiding me” I shook my head so vigorously that it felt like my brain was shattering against the side of my skull, another head injuries I can add to the list. I was born with some kind of disorder which makes me a natural klutz. I never use it against anyone since I shouldn’t. “What happened back there, we were about to go to first period then we are told that we need to evacuate school? Is there something you’re not saying?” I sighed deeply.
“I’ll tell you over facebook tonight, alright! I’m going to tell a lot of people tonight so they know and something can be sorted. But I want you to promise you won’t laugh at me when I do tell you!” I said stopping in my tracks inside the middle of the busiest hallway in school. She shrugged, that clearly meant no promises. That was probably the closest I was going to get with her.
We passed through the school gates, I saw Dylan automatically. Without turning my head I shouted “Hey Dylan, over here” I carried on walking since he didn’t notice us. A slim figure and a slightly rounded one came up to us. “Hey guys” I said. I knew them from out the corner of my murky green eyes.
“How did you know we were here?” it was Jane, the larger of the two figures. I raised an eyebrow, still not turning. She should know after five years together that I can tell an entire scene out of the corner of my eye. “Of course, you’re just magic aren’t you?” she spoke sarcastically.
