The hallway wasn’t much different to the room I was in before; it was very plain with nothing in it apart from a few doors and a staircase. I stumbled along to the stairs. This was going to be challenging for me and everyone else. Walking down normally would more than likely end in me falling a majority of the way down so I pushed myself down on my bum saving both time and effort of walking down.
I was surprised to see no one in the room connecting to the stair case or in the room off to the side. “Where is everyone? I know I’ve already asked but I can’t see anyone” Mum was now standing at my side helping me slide up the wall so I was sort of standing. I pound my hand to the wall to keep my balance whilst I amble along the dark corridor to what may have once been a dining room.
“They are probably out searching for supplies” I look at her for a brief moment to see terror and panic written in bold across her face. I look away to check where I was walking just in case I place my foot down causing me to scream out in pain. I open my mouth to speak when Meg, Jane and Robin burst through the door. I relax at the sight of some of my closest friends.
“We found something in the shed we think maybe of use” robin says running off in the direction they had just come from. I thought best of it no to follow them outside; who knew what could happen if I did?
“I’ll just stay here” I pointed to the spot I was stood on. However by the time I had said I was alone in the darkness of the lone house in the middle of nowhere. I took the time I had to execute a plan for the rest of the time we are travelling. We should probably take our time to get there; the countryside may be a bit dangerous since we will be open to the world. Ration our food because we can’t be sure if we will be any left after exploring the different towns and villages. Stick together, one of the most important rules in the book to make sure no one gets hurt or lost; everyone wants to make it through the apocalypse and that is what I intend to happen.
“Kat I think this will help you walk” someone called from another room. I face the direction I heard the sound come from and see Meg holding up a pair of crutches. My eyes widen at the sight.
“Oh wow, that is awesome I can walk. I will no longer be a burden on everyone” I reach out to take the crutches. No one decides to correct me or say ‘you’re not a burden’ but no words are muttered upon us. “What time is it?” I needed to change subject.
“Uh well looks like it’s about six o’clock” Jane pointed out looking at a clock. I raised an eye brow in question. The number was helpful but I couldn’t tell if it was AM or PM. “Oh AM” I smile to myself, being quite smug. I wipe my face with my left hand and yawn. I hear a vibration from my back pocket; I pull out my phone to see I had a message. I was surprised to see it was from Nicole since she lived in New Zealand now.
“Why do I have a message from Nicole?” I ask mainly to myself but everyone just shrugs. I click on it so I can read its every word: Hey Kat where are you? The whole town is deserted!
At that point I felt like fainting, my legs became weak and my the crutches felt useless. I feel all the blood drain from my body making my skin fad into a pale white. “What’s wrong?” Mum asks resting her hand on my shoulder giving me more weight on my weak legs. I swallow extremely; my throat burned to the point I couldn’t speak. I raised the phone into her view and the others. Their reaction was similar to mine.
“What are we to do?” I ask simply even though it was a pretty stupid question. “Wait where are we maybe they could meet up with us. There can’t be a harm in that, right?” my strength comes rushing back to me even if only for a minute.
“This may sound stupid but we are in her old house” Meg said weakly. I smile reaching for my phone. I reply to her text so she could meet us here. It vibrates again in my hand, read the message: Why are you in my old house and meet you there soon?
I put my phone back in my pocket. It takes a few minutes before someone arrives at the front door; I walk over to open it. Surprisingly it was just Nicole standing at the door holding a small holdall and rucksack. I smile at her waiting for her to walk in before slamming the door. “Hey guys”.
“Hi, there are some things we need to talk about!” my words are fast and almost inaudible. “The reason we are in your house is because we were hiding.” She looks at me like I was crazy and about to pounce on her repeatedly stabbing her with a butter knife. “You would have been safer in New Zealand! We have a infestation of freaks. So far all we know is it has spread across the UK and nowhere else but we don’t get any TV or news since this started” I looked around to my friends for guidance. The just nodded and gave me a thumbs up.
“That still doesn’t explain much” her bags fell to her feet and her arms were crossed. They were tanned; no longer the pale colour I knew them as three years ago.
“There is a zombie apocalypse I broke my foot, well shattered every bone in it and we were hiding out whilst I was out, cold” I explain in as much detail as I want to put into the equation. She nods and pushes her bags to the side. “I recommend that you sort out your stuff. Carry as little as you need; the less we have the quicker we can move” I hold her rucksack in my hand. Her movement is fast as she snatches it off me to remove the contents of it.
“Lucky for you I don’t have anything of personal value with me” she teases packing a clean pair of clothes from the holdall. I laugh and sit down on the floor in the middle of the room. “Who else is with us? I guessing it’s not just us is it?” she wasn’t wrong at all.
“There is Alan, Dylan, Robin and her sister, Jane, Meg, Scott, Lamin, Georgina and my brother, sisters and mum.” I speak calmly but inside I was worried; it was late yet no one had been in contact or come to our hide out in what seemed like forever after I was resting.
“So what’s the plan?”
