Kat's P.O.V
I sigh heavily; this was going to take a long time. I was oblivious to where I was so my plans were muddled since I was completely lost.
“Kat Listen, everything will be fine” Dylan reassured me, placing a hand on my shoulder. I shrugged it off, I was never one for human contact, and it felt wrong. I shook my head, I knew inside he was dying, he was terrified and I was too. He had lost his family and now he may have lost his girlfriend and I could have the same issue: losing my friends and my best friend.
“How do you know? Meg is out there and we have no idea where, I don’t want to admit it but she could be dead or even one of those freaks. I am just as freaked as you alright. I don’t think I can handle seeing them like that, my family is out there and I can’t help. I am freaking out. They are everything to me since I have no life” I raise my voice at him. I hated to say everything I just did but all of it was true, every word. I have no life now and then, my best friend is missing and so is my family.
“Listen, alright I know this is hard for you but as I have heard, from you, a million times: stop being so negative. Right now there is so much negativity I am surprised you still have it in you to be standing. You are strong and even when you were practically invisible you had the strength no one else did but you never used it. You had potential to beat the shit out of everyone but you didn’t, you stood your ground, backed off because you saw it wasn’t worth it so why are you fighting now? You are fighting a losing battle when you know that you can walk away and then you would have the power to say you were the better person. So stop this shit and lead us through all of this, we need you to be back to how you were” I saw desperation in his eyes as he knelt upon the hard floor pleading for my old self to return. I wanted to be that person but everything has the power to change you even if it is just a little bit.
“You’re right” I mumble, perking my head up. “It doesn’t mean I have to talk to Alan though” I teased, however Alan heard this and he looked terrified, why I had no idea, it was like he was expecting me to run over to him and tear his head off; feeding both of them to the hideous creatures that roamed the street.
“Alright everyone, listen up. I know this has been tough but we can get through it all, there is nothing stopping us from achieving our goals. Even if we are stuck together, unable to find the others, it doesn’t make us any less of a team. NO matter what happens we stick together, Alan” I glared over at the dark haired man who hid between his friends; he can be such a coward sometimes. Everyone looked confused but clapped slowly at my speech. I wasn’t expecting that but at least I got a reaction.“Not exactly what I was expecting but it still works” Dylan joked, walking slowly to the glass doors. I turned around to see everyone lined up. I sigh and wave my hands for them to move forwards, this was going to take a while, there may only be a few of us but that wasn’t stopping the overlay of traffic.
“Kat, see ya around” Mercedes smiled, holding what looked to be a chainsaw in her hands, copying her companions. I nodded, bringing a faint smile to my face. I turned back to face the door, everyone was outside, stretching their legs and taking in the fresh air. I sigh in content, walking over to my friends.
“Where first?” Rachel S asked, looking around at the surrounding. I shrugged my shoulders but took a step forwards and noticed a familiar shop: a party shop. I was oddly placed amongst all the houses and large companies.
“We head that way” I said pointing to the left of the tiny shop, if I was correct this would take us to loads of shops, some with food, accessories and best of all clothes, suitable for winter. I smile to myself, I knew exactly where I was meaning that we were on track and we would be able to make it to our destination. “There should be some shops just over that way, there should be enough supplies in all three to keep us going for a while” Everyone followed suit as I wandered slowly through the foliage that was behind a large grey building I guessed was the old Comet. I was right as usual, I was so happy for my ability to memorise things after one trip.
“Listen Kat” Alan called, walking alongside me. His speech was quiet; he didn’t want anyone else to hear us. I ignored him but that didn’t stop me from standing still, looking forwards into space. “Kat, we need to talk” I shook my head, he wasn’t thinking. If he did he would understand why I was ignoring him. “Kat this is not getting any easier with you being like this” he motioned his hands up and down, his fingertips aiming either side of my body. I really wanted to hit him, he was annoying me.
I started walking again, pushing past him like he wasn’t even there. I knew what he was trying to do and it is really hard to ignore him and keep a straight face without collapsing in a heap with the regret and guilt piling up on my shoulders. I wanted to forgive him but I wasn’t going to give in, he had to think about his mistakes and then I may think about forgiveness.
A pain crept across my chest as I walked away leaving him alone in amongst the other travellers with us. It was burning me, eating away at my insides, it was a pain that I wouldn’t be able to get rid of for a while. I edged over the small hill to bask in the glory that would stand in front of us. I readied myself for the worst and the best case scenario as the tops of buildings came into sight. My eyes widened in horror as I gazed upon what was in my sight, there was no backing away now!
