Trying to Belong

Chapter 2 x

Rey walked out of Leia's office, carrying everything she'd collect as well as all the mental questions running through her head.

"Ready to get lunch?" amethyst asked Rey, a beautiful and warm smile on her face.

"Yes." Rey nodded "so-"

"Is everyone here somehow related? Or connected? Yup."

"Yeah. How did-"

"I'm smart at guessing what people want. Just not textbook smart. I really don't like being forced to learn something." Amethyst replied.

"So how are you connected? Are you related to the principal too? I mean... you're really helpful and...stuff." Rey asked but her sentence struggled as she suddenly began to feel awkward for being so nosey.

The breath caught in Amethyst's lungs as she thought about one particular relation of Leia's. "Physically." was all she said and was all she could say. Rey raised an eyebrow curiously but continued following Amethyst who was starting to walk with a pace that said 'keep up or you'll fall behind'.

To Rey Amethyst's answer seemed bullshit but she would not press on it. It wasn't her place.

They collected what they wanted for their lunch and sat down. "Lemme see your schedule. Maybe we have some classes together." Amethyst said to Rey who's eyes were scanning the timetable she had on her lap.

"Umm....yes that would be.... nice." Rey replied, not wanting to sound too eager in her making of a friend.

"Amethyst!" a voice said cheerfully and Poe, someone Amethyst knew sat down across from her at the table. It really was like Hogwarts in the dining room.

"Hey Poe. Where is Finn?"

"Just grabbing some food." he said and smiled. "Who's this chick?"

"I"m Rey." Rey said with her mouth full. She swallowed and took a sip of juice before shaking his hand.

"Rey transferred here." Amethyst said to defend Rey's food consumption. "From somewhere where food is like ancient treasure."

"Everyone is really nice here." said Rey. "so umm...I imagine the principle keeps records of who everyone's parents are. The ones that pay for the tuition."

"Yes probably in her office or on the system. Why?" Poe asked.

"Let me guess you don't know who sent you here so you want to find out." said Amethyst.

"It's silly but maybe family found me and... it's silly." Rey responded and looked away.

"That's not silly." Amethyst patted her friend's shoulder. "My parents just ditched me here. Which is fine. Like..."

"Hey babe" Poe smiled as a black skinned young man about their age walked up to them

"Hey honey." he leaned down and kissed him briefly while setting down the food. "Hi I'm Finn." he noticed the new student at their table.

"Rey."

"Pleasure." he handed Poe a few things. "So is amethyst your roommate?"

"Yeah."

Amethyst sighed staring at the teacher's table. "If only my boyfriend was open about our relationship..."

"Who's your boyfriend" Rey asked.

"She won't say." Finn and Poe said at the same time.

"I like animals." said Rey. "Why I thought that was relevant I don't know..."
