It looks as if this world is doomed. Traveling on public transportation I ran into this "man" today, true story. Hat turned, tattooed face, wild heart, swearing like a sailor, rebellious attitude. The Whole nine. Your "typical wannabe" so to speak.
Now I'm not unused to this type because it's what you see often around these parts. But it hurt my heart and hurt my soul because as he gets on the bus, he gets on with three kids being supported by their own mother. It hurt my soul because I know that this man, in all of his wannabe glory, is just reproducing the stigma of what a black "man" is supposed to be. He's setting the bar lower and it's going to crush our race under the weight. The Pain of seeing this little girl looking at this boy thinking that's how we are supposed to act, this boy setting in her mind that there is nothing better than that out there for us...Well, I am training to be a man. I don't want to leave a future where the wannabe gangsters make it seem like we are degrading. They are keeping us down because they do not show that we have progressed.
What I've just witnessed is the regression of the black man. We have a feared potential and the way they keep is in check? Media. Music we listen to, TV shows they portray us in, news, everything. The regression back to the days of no reading, bad language, and terrible attitudes.
They say, to know where you are going, you have to understand where you came from. But right now, to the black "men" that I see, the past is a mystery and well, the future is going to be history. Repeating. Back to the chains.
I guess the world's an addiction and it's serving up its next fix to our future generations. But I'm going to kick this addiction. I'm going to show mines that there is a better way. That we can be better than the media shows, that we see in our buses, in our TV, hear in our music, see in pictures. I'm going to show the definition of black excellence. And it all starts with me.
