Chapter 26

The group didn't have much time. They knew Ilios had minimal space to hide where Acranum wouldn't see her or blow their cover. She was directly beneath the cloud where the witch lay, safety from her watchful eyes. The sky was broken in storms as angry rains pelted from the sky. Acranum was angry, and she was letting everyone know it.

The decided plan was to have Ilios shoot one of Julian's arrows at the witch, and then hide in the mote under the heavy draw-bridge. Acranum would be able to find her eventually, but it would give Luna and Vultrin enough time to strike.

They waited till nightfall, watching as the sun declined over the tree line. The land grew very dark, very quickly, and soon the perfect hour had arrived. The pitch black would distort Acranum, and help make things run a bit more smooth.

Illios has been beneath her cloud all day long, just calculating how fast and how far she would have to run to reach the mote without being seen. The girl figured she would be able to make it if she really hugged the sides of the castle, keeping herself in the shadows.

The rest of the group sat poised in the highest tower of the castle. Flamula would light a torch as signal for Illios to shoot. Vulturen and Luna were ready to go from the forest, crouched low to the ground. The two could see Illios from their position, and when they saw the arrow leave the string, they would make their move.

Illios stared at the tower, stiffening once she saw a burst of light in the distance. The torch. Refusing to hesitate, she lifted the bow and pointed it toward the sky. There was not much aim needed, because the target was just so huge. She strung the bow, her fingers tight against the wood, before retracting and watching the thin arrow sail through the air.

Acranum grunted as it grazed her massive head. Once Illios knew she had hit her, she instantly darted toward the castle. She ran along the shadows, keeping very close to the structure, and followed them until she saw the mote ahead. She dove in, tail forming as soon as she hit the water and peeked over the top. The only set back this plan had was that she couldn't see that fight between Luna, Vultrin and the witch. She could only hope it was going well.

Luna sprinted out from the trees, eyes a swirling shade of blue. Vultren shrieked and flung into the air. He sailed over the witch's head and sent a surge of intense heat upon her. She grunted in confusion, eyes darting around her.

Meanwhile, Luna was taking advantage of her newfound ice powers. The girl summoned an icicle dagger, long and sharp and three times her size. She hurled it at Acranum and turned away when she heard it slice through skin. She hated violence, but at least she knew it was succesful.

Acranum wailed, hurling balls of power in every direction. It was just too dark for her to see them. Vultrin cackled, slamming into her, whilst slicing the tips of his razor-like wings.

Luna found that when she breathed, she could create a storm. A hurricane, a blizzard, a tornado- you name it. Right now? She used all three. Acranum was now facing an icy tornado, which would weaken her greatly.

Ilios was right in saying this would be easy. With her power down, all Vultren had to do was wound her once more. He took his opportunity, ascending high into the air, before plummeting down to slam Acranum and destroy any magic power she had left.

The witch screamed, watching as the clouds beneath her melted away. She found herself going with them, and soon vanished into the sky.
