EDITING

Maddy's P.O.V.

London's beautiful in the morning. I can't believe I get to spend the entire summer here. I got recommended by my teacher, Mr. Huggett, for a grant that lets students who excel in history visit a forgiven country. I figured it was a long shot, but I do have a perfect GPA so....

I've never been out of the US, so this was a huge deal for me. Plus, I just might get to meet 5 very famous, very attractive, British singers.

Yes, I'm a Directioner.

Unfortunately, I'm not one not one of the lucky ones who has connections through relatives or one whose parents are rich enough to by them backstage passes. I've never been to a single concert.

But as Harry says "A true fan isn't one who has hundreds of photos of us, but someone who loves us unconditionally."

Staring at the sights and sounds of the city, I hear something unsettling. Screaming? Sirens? As I turn the corner onto a new street, I stop dead, staring at the scene in front of me.

"Uh huh. Ok"

Eleanor turns to look at me from her seat on the floor, the tears still streaming down her face. It kills me to see her so broken. Her face looks so hopeful and hopeless at once, begging me for news she knows I can't give.

"Paul said they have got the girls under control, so no ones gonna barge in anytime soon." At my lame attempt at humor she actually cracks a small smile. "But they can't get the girls to leave without the risk of some of them getting in the hotel. So," I sigh heavily "We're on lockdown. No leaving he hotel, no speaking to anyone but family and the boys. They'll send up room service to us."

"Ok."

El's whisper is barely audible. I lean down next to her, cupping her face in my hands.

"Everything's gonna be ok."

"It's my fault"

I'm so shocked, I can't even speak for a moment. How could she even think that?

"Babe, it's most definitely not your fault. If anything, it mine. I should have proposed somewhere private, no one would have found out."

But even as I say it, I know it's a lie. It took the media less then 24 hours to find out about Zayns engagement to Perrie. There is no way we could've kept it a secret for long.

"I'm gonna go call the boys, ok?"

She nods. I feel bad leaving her. But the boys have a right to know. I slowly stand and walk back into our bedroom, to the bedside table with my phone. I can't imagine having to explain this more then once, so I decide to do a 5-way call. I pick up the phone and dial Harry's number.

"Harry?"

"Hey Lou!"

"Hold on, I'm gonna get the other boys."

I add Zayn, Liam, and Nialls numbers and wait for them to pick up.

"Louis?"

"Hey Louis"

"Hi!"

"Hey guys." I gulp, these are my best mates, and I hate worrying them. No, I have to. I'd much rather have them find out from me then Twitter or TV.

"I need to tell you guys something"

"What's up mate?" Zayn asks.

"Yeah, something wrong?" That was Harry. It's clear none of them know, making this that much harder. I mentally slap myself. Just man up and tell them!

"I, um, proposed to Eleanor, and she said yes."

They all cheer, which makes me feel even worse. Today should have been one of the best days of our lives. But instead, it's one of the worst.

"Congrats!" Niall crows.

"Are you ok?" That'll be Liam, so concerned. "You don't sound happy."

I choke back a sob.

"Well, there are at least 500 girls rioting outside out hotel."

Shocked silence.

"Check your Twitters"

I can actually hear the buttons clicking as they pull up the site on their phones and computers.

"Oh my god."

"I'm so sorry Lou."

"We'll be there in 10."

"Thanks guys" They are honestly the best friends a guy could have. From the next room over, I hear sobbing.

"I gotta go." Without waiting for their reply I dash into the next room. Eleanor is still on the floor, scrolling through her phone, crying uncontrollably now. I snatch it away and check the screen.

In mere minutes she's gotten thousands of tweets, all their hate pouring at her in a flood of insults, telling her she doesn't deserve me, she's ugly, a horrible person. As I keep scrolling, I see death threats. The phone drops from my hands. All I can do is try to comfort her. She doesn't even respond when I slip my arms around her.

"Baby, none of that is true"

She lifts her face.

"Why me? What did I do? All Perrie got was congratulations and praise. Why does it have to be me?" She let out a strangled cry and sobs harder. I hated this feeling of helplessness, not being able to do a thing to cheer her. She mumbled into her hands.

"I just can't do it."

I think my heart actually stopped.

"El?" She stared at me with sad eyes, red from crying and filled with regret. I closed my eyes and tried to brave myself for the pain of her next words. The words that would break my heart.

But before she could say a thing, we both were surprised by a shout from outside, louder then the screaming girls, louder then the sirens. It cut right through to our room and we heard it crystal clear.

"WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE!?!?!"
