This chapter is dedicated to my community theater's production of Les Miz. I am so honored to have gotten to work with you all. It was, truly the best show I've ever been a part of. Those 9 months were like an in-depth study of one of the most amazing shows ever to have been on Broadway. I love you guys.
And P.S. If you haven't seen Les Miz, WATCH IT!!!!! It will change your life.
I'm not even kidding.

Harry's P.O.V.
Bring. Bring.
"Hello?" Maddy's clear voice picks up thorough my cell phone.
"Hey, it's Harry. Wanna come over? We're gonna order some takeout, watch a movie or two, eat junk food while watching the movie..."
"Hmmm, I don't know, I might have plans tonight......"
I can practically hear the teasing smile in her voice, the one that tells me she just wants to mess with me.
"Come on, what else could you want? An evening with five pop stars and their girlfriends? That's gotta sound tempting."
"Oh I don't know." I can hear her faking a dramatic sigh.
"Please?"
Ding dong.
"One sec Maddy..."
I pull open the front door.
And there she is, a grin spread across her face, holding the 2013 version Les Misérables DVD.
"I already called Oriental Flavor, delivery will be here in about half and hour. Hope you like Chinese."
I just laugh, and laugh.

Niall's P.O.V.
"What's this movie even about anyway?" I grouch, slouching low on the couch.
I'm really not in the mood to watch a romantic movie. Not since Allie left.
Maddy sits down on the couch next to me. "Come on Niall, it's really good. It's about a good-hearted thief who serves 19 years in prison and is freed by a kind bishop. He starts a factory and adopts the illegitimate daughter of one of his workers. Fast forward 10 years, the June Rebellion in France is starting, and all this while he's been tracked by the same policeman who put him in jail in the first place." At the end of her summary she finally realizes we're all staring her. "What? What'd I say?"
"Maddy, you're insane. How the hell do you know all that?" I'm honestly baffled.
"I'm obsessed with Broadway shows. And Les Miz is incredible. A beautifully tragic love story. I have posters and t-shirts. The wall in my room that's not covered in play posters is painted with quotes from the score and the book. Just watch. You'll see."
She popped the DVD into the player and pressed play.
Uuuuungh.

"Damn their warnings damn their lies, they will see the people rise!"
Okay, I hate to admit it, but I'm hooked. Maddy was right. Les Miz is an incredible show.
Right now we're at the barricade, and Eponine, the poor street girl hopelessly in love with the student Marius, had been shot. Marius takes her in her arms and they begin to sing a song Maddy informs me is called "A Little Fall of Rain."
"Don't you fret,
Monsieur Marius.
I don't feel any pain.
A little fall of rain
Can hardly hurt me now.
You're here.
That's all I need to know.
And you will keep me safe
And you will keep me close
And rain will make the flowers grow."
Halfway through the song, I look over at Maddy. I'm stunned. Tears are streaming down her face, and she doesn't even try to wipe them away. She just sat there, crying and crying and crying.
I can't help it, I reach over and pull her into one of my famous Horan hugs. She grips me back tightly.
When the song is over, Harry reaches over and presses pause on the machine.
"Maddy? You okay?"
She lifts her hands to wipes her tears away, and manages a small smile.
"I'm fine. It's that song. It always gets to me."
After no one speaks to interrupt her, she continues her explanation.
"She was his best friend. He told her all his secrets, he trusted her with his life. But he never noticed how much she actually loved him. Took for granted her affections in fact. Until now. She's dying in his arms, and he finally realizes how much he really loved her. But it's too late. All he can do is hold her. Sing to her. And try to offer her some comfort as she's eased out of this world.
Maddy leans over to press the play button again.
And no one says a word for the rest of the movie.
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
It's true.
I cry every time I hear that song.
