Chapter 20

The tunnel was dark and heavy as the only lights they had was what they could make from what was around them. Which wasn't much but as Engelbart, Widit, and Theo managed to patch together some lumiglobes from what was around them and place them on poles for them to carry, the groups slowly, very slowly, advanced through the roughly hewn tunnels made by claws, picks, and other tools that could dig.

The tunnels were strewn with the bones of dead animals, most likely the Carkiss Rats due to their size, as Phirx said to them all, "I sense several... not really intelligent beings in here.."

"Carkiss Rats.. Logan, Alec, we have to take point to keep the rest alive..."

Alec and Logan nodded as the trio took point with their bolters and melee weapons as they continued forward along the small tunnel that barely fit the two Grey Marines and the bulk of the Grey knight clad in Terminator armor. But for everyone else here, if fit them well enough as they all kept behind the trio, keeping their lasweapons up along with the autoguns in the other trios hands.

As the lumiglobes let out a light that was bright enough to see about a few yards before them, they were slowly headed forward and slightly downward as the tunnels seemed to be going downward instead of upward towards the actual weapon mounted on the cliff.

This presented Haydra to ask, "Are you sure this is the right way?"

"I patrolled these tunnels, sometimes with no light. I know just about all the crooks and crannies possible here." Jonathan as he kept his bolter up and sweeping the tunnel before him, readied to fire when a Carkiss Rat eventually appeared.

"Besides... from the looks of it.. it seems like we're about to reach one of the checkpoints that the Guardsmen use to use frequently for patrols down here." said Logan as he pointed ahead.

The checkpoint was mostly a bunch of old sandbags positioned across the span of the tunnels width as there was a lascannon in ill repair still on its pod while the lumiglobes were out of power to glow even a small light. But they were enough for Enngelbart, Theo, and Widit to make more and improve their lumiglobes they had made and as the light became brighter and better, now they could see a ways ahead of them as they could see the claw marks, old blood, and more staining the wall as Haydrax said, "We must push on."

But just as Logan crossed over the checkpoint, suddenly they heard and angry screech and they all faced forward as weapons were brought to bear as they saw a huge rat before them. A Carkiss Rat.

Jonathan didn't hesitate as he fired and it was blown to pieces but not before several others ran towards them and Alec stayed standing while Logan and Jonathan crouched and the trio fired into the horde of humongous rats as blood splattered the walls, floor, and their armor as the rats were torn to shreds without mercy.

And then, a hole opened behind the group and Jaxx, Drake, Stark, Rex, and Toombs all took up firing positions as Angelo joined them and they fired at the rats coming from it as Haydrax shouted, "HOLD THE LINE!!!"

Jonathan reloaded a clip as a Cakriss Rat suddenly managed to jump and land on him and Jonathan ripped his chainsword out and ran the buzzing saw blade through the huge rat as it wailed and then he threw the corpse away as he continued to fire at the swarm of angry rodents.

Jaxx fired his shotgun as a Carkiss Rats face was blown to bits and as he racked the slide back and then forward, he greeted his teeth as he fired again and then he said, " We gotta move before they overrun us!!!!"

"ALEC! JONATHAN! LOGAN!!!" Roared Haydrax as he fired his plasma pistol at the enemy. "ADVANCE AND FIRE AT THESE THINGS!!!"

Jonathan, Alec, and Logan all took out their melee weapons as Alec continued to fire his Storm Bolter and as the trio advanced, chainswords revved up to a ear-splitting whine as Alec's Nemesis blade crackled with energy and as another surge of Carkiss 10 appeared and then suddenly the trio swung their blades in a flurry of limbs, claws, teeth, and bodies as blood flew and a path was made in blood and bone
"Everyone! Forward but keep those things off our backs!!" Shouted Haydrax as he ran after the trio and the Mechanist troops and Techpriests, plus Prhix, Eli, Scarlet, and Mac, ran after him while Jaxx and his group stayed back a little to help cover them from the swarm of Rats that were slowly dwindling to nothing.
