"Hello," Your mother called into the phone. "(L/n) residence..." she made grunting noises, and you soon realized she probably had the phone cord wrapped around her body and she was trying to get out of it. "how can I help you?"
"Mom! It's me!" You exclaim happily to her, holding the phone close to your ear. You haven't spoke to her in a while, and you really missed her ramblings on random topics.
"Wha-? (Y/n)? Hey! How's it goin'?" She hollers through the phone. "How's the investigating going? Your cryptograms? And your-"
Your laugh cut her off. "Again with the questions..." You leaned against the payphone pole. "Investigating is fine. I mean, really! It's very interesting in Gravity Falls. And my cryptograms? Stanford helped me with them," you said through the phone, grinning. Not grinning just because of the cryptograms, but Stanford himself.
"Stanford's his name? I never caught it when I first met him. He's being good to you?" She suddenly asked casually, and your eyes widen.
"Of course he is, Mom...why?" You retorted back quickly and quietly. You feared he was standing behind you and listening to your every word...but that could just be your paranoia. You leaned in even closer to the phone, arching your back a little.
"Oh, I don't know...maybe because I can feel something more in your tone, hm?" She laughed briefly.
Your eyes widened even more, and your cheeks felt as rosy as ever. You knew that question had to come up at one point.
Mothers know everything, you thought before gathering words to speak to her. You cleared your throat and tried to act confident with your tone. "Something more? Pfft. That's ridiculous."Not ridiculous.
The end of the line was suddenly very quiet, and you could only hear the soft crackling in the phone and some slight shuffling. Maybe still untangling herself or waiting for an actual answer. Sigh. You were horrible at lying, and you had to slip up at one point. You let out a puff of air and said even more softly, "okay...fine. I do like him. I like him a lot. I just don't know if he feels the same for me?"
"Aw! That's so cute! If I could hug you through the phone I would! It's good to do your favourite thing and get out there at the same time!" She cheered and you face palmed. "and don't worry about that, sweets. Who wouldn't like you?" She laughed and you laughed along with her this time. More of an awkward laugh.
"Alright, Mom. I'm going to head off. Call you soon," you blew kisses into the phone, and all you could hear were silent chants.
"My daughter is in love!" She squealed before blowing kisses into the phone and saying goodbye as well.
You narrowed your eyes and shifted your head around to look at the area. No sign of anybody. Just the soft breeze hitting the large trees leaves.
Thank goodness, you thought and hung the phone back onto its hook.Back to the diner you go, sticking your hands into your pockets and trudging down the sidewalk, the warm wind trailing behind you.
