For years, she was there. Smiling softly, hushing him, comforting him. She was there when he fell down and scraped his knees. She was there as his volleyball improve. She was there when he won his first official match. She was there when he lost to Shiratorizawa. She was there at every turning point of his life. She was there whenever and wherever.

"You're a great person, Tooru. The world deserves more people like you," she would say whether she comforted of praised him. Then she would press her index finger against her lips with a wink. "So... shh and cheer up. Stand up again because I have your back" or "Shh... Appreciate your victory. You've led the team well and I'm proud of you." And then she would disappear. She was his secret.

"(F/n)-Chan..." that's all he had to say. Call or text, she would come running, asking what was wrong. Then she would do her thing: Make him feel that he was the best.

However, towards the end of junior high, Oikawa began to change. His mind was always on volleyball. He became obsessed. Wanting to beat Kageyama. Wanting to beat Ushijima. He simply forgot about her. When he lost to Shiratorizawa one fateful day, he snapped. He turned to volleyball, using the sport to comfort. He pushed her away. "Tooru..." but he left her in the dust. Leaving her to watch him slowly destroy himself.

Pinned against the tree, she pleaded with him. "Tooru... Stop. Stop destroying yourself." But, he was far too hardened. He glared down at the girl who let tears slide down her face. She wanted to scream at him but she couldn't. She wouldn't. "Tooru... Don't do this to yourself," she cried, gripping to his shirt. She wasn't smiling, he noted.

"I'm sorry but there's no other way if I want to beat Ushijima and Tobio," Oikawa said with finality. That's it. He forgot how she had led him and guided him. He pushed away and marched home. His thoughts clouding his mind.

"Tooru!" came a cry. He felt his body fall forward and then...

He didn't know what happened next. "T-Tooru..."

He opened his eyes with a snap and hissed at the bright lights.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

The steady sound of the heart monitor told him to wake up. Hospital. I'm at the hospital... But how.

Oh...

"What do you mean?" a sharp voice came from the other side of the door of the room.

"I-It's impossible."

"The girl just saved my son's life!"

"But --"

"Please save her."

"I'm sorry. We're trying but --"

The door opened. Oikawa's mother, pale and ashen, stepped in with a doctor. "Tooru!"

"Mum," Oikawa croaked, coughing lightly. The older female look-alike gave him some water. "Mum... where's (F/n)-Chan?"

Mrs. Oikawa turned to the doctor. "See. He knows her. You have to save her. Please!"

"I'm sorry, Oikawa-san. She suffered so much internal damages. Any operations will be too dangerous. Her survival rate is less than 5%... and she only has hours to live. She's suffering greatly and she refused to take painkillers," the doctor said. How could he be so calm, Oikawa thought hotly.

"NO!" Oikawa's voice rang out sharply. "Mum, please let me see (F/n)-Chan. Please. I owe so much to her. My whole life. I want to see her. Please. Before it's too late," he begged.

The doctor hesitated. "I don't --"

"Let him. If you can't save her, let him see her," Oikawa's mother said firmly.

"... Fine."

The doctor quickly removed the needles and helped the boy to his feet. He led the boy to her room. Oikawa walked pass the chatters of families visiting and taking care of their sick ones but her room was silent and empty. Oikawa could hear her labored breaths as she fought against the waves of pain, staying awake at her last moments. Oikawa's heart broke at her horrible state.

"T-Tooru," she mumbled weakly, struggling against her pain. She lifted her hands with difficulty.

With a cry, Oikawa collapsed at her side. He held her close gently as he sobbed to her chest. "I'm so sorry. I was so selfish. I shouldn't have... I shouldn't have...," he swallowed. He felt the weak gentle stroke as she soothed him.

"Shh, Tooru... It'll be okay. Cheer up... Stand up... I have your back... Shh... I'm so... proud of you...Don't destroy yourself again... Shh... Tooru... Smile please. One more." (F/n) murmured. Oikawa gave a hysterical laugh.

"I'm the one that's suppose to comfort you. Not the other way round," he choked.

"Tooru... You're a... great.... person... The world... deserves... more people... like you...," (F/n) stroke his cheek.

"No. The world doesn't want a horrible person like me."

"Tooru... Shh... I'm so... glad to... meet... a sweet... person... like you... I'm so proud... of you... Continue... making me... proud, yeah?"

"I promise, (F/n)-Chan. I promise but promise you'll survive. Please."

"I'm sorry, Tooru... That's... one promise... I-I can't make..."

"NO! Don't say such things!"

"Tooru... Shh...," she gave her last energy to smile and grip his hand tighter. "I-I'm always... here... So... Shh..."

Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep.

"(F/n)-Chan? No! Please wake up! Please! You can't leave! You can't!" he cried, shaking her.

"Oikawa-san. We're sorry but we can't do anything," the doctors came in and pried the boy from her still warm body.

"Please!"

"Oikawa-san! She's gone," one of them said firmly with a hint of pity. Exhausted, Oikawa sunk numbly to the floor.

"She's not gone," he whimpered.

"Shh... Tooru... I'm here for you."

He felt empty, staring at the amount of presents in front of him. Gifts from fangirls and friends, asking him to get well. (F/n)-Chan didn't get anything. Only mum was at her funeral. No one else, Oikawa thought numbly.

"Oikawa-kun!! Are you okay?" the fangirls asked. No one asked about the girl who saved his life, he noted.

"Hey, glad you're fine. We'll have a hard time if you really can't play," the coach patted his back. What about the girl who died for me? Did she mean nothing to the world?

"Congratulations on your win, Oikawa-san. We're from the Volleyball Weekly..." a reporter congratulated him. (F/n)-Chan would have celebrated with me, congratulating me genuinely. "... we would like to ask some questions." Oikawa didn't say anything. Behind the crowd of people, a girl stood besides a tree. She grinned at him and pressed her index finger to her lips with a wink.

"Oikawa-san?"

"Huh? Oh, I guess..."

"During the match, you played with more intensity than before. Did the reason had to be linked with your near accident?"

"No... It linked to the person who actually died."

"Huh?"

"I made a promise... to someone... to make her proud..."

"Okay. Thanks for your time."

The girl waved and disappeared. "I'm so proud of you, Tooru."
