We pulled into the driveway, and the car was shut off. I went to get out until Bret stopped me.
"Wait. I'll help you. I don't need you to fall again." I sighed, and waited for him to come to my side. Once he did he opened door, and grabbed my crutches. I placed me hand on his shoulder, and hopped down, landing on my good leg. He handed me my crutches, and he held my waist.
I'm really starting to love the feeling of his hands on me. Just the way of him being so gental, and not wanting to hurt me. He's the only one that's like that anymore.
We reached the door, and I told Bret which key unlocked the door. He slipped in the little bronze key, turned to the right, and the door opened. He helped me inside, and then came inside himself, closing the door. "Well that went well." I said sarcastically, while Bret got a Coke from the fridge. "Tell me about it." He grumbled, and went off into the living room. I followed behind, and joined him on the couch. "Bret."
"Hmm?" He hummed.
"I'm sorry." I said as I played with the bottom of his shirt, being more interested in that than looking at him.
"Emily, you need to stop apologizing. What happened today isn't any of your fault. Nothing that they try to do to you is your fault." He sighed, and put his drink on the small coffee table. He made me get up only for a minute so he could lie on his back. Then, he pulled me on top of him, so I could rest my head on his chest.
"I'm too big for this." I said as I played with his shirt sleeve. "No you're not. Stop with that." He sounded a little aggravated, but it was the truth. I'm too big to be lying on him.
He combed his hand through my hair, and it was basically putting me to sleep. Until Bret had to speak up.
"Hey, you haven't eaten anything today, have you?"
"Well, no. I haven't been hungry." I tried to shrug it off as though it was no big deal, but he didn't think of it that way.
"Come on to the kitchen, and I'll make you something. You have to be at least a little hungry." He pushed on, but I wasn't having it. Empty is good. Empty is beautiful. Empty is strong.
"No thanks, I haven't been feeling well anyway. Really, don't bother. I just think sleep will do the trick." I tried so hard to sound convincing, and to my surprise it worked.
"Alright. Do you want to go to bed?" He questioned, and I nodded on his chest. He sat up, and told me to wrap my arms around his neck.
"You don't have to carry me."
"Yes I do." He said firmly, and I left it at that. I don't feel like arguing right now.
He got up, and took me with him. I nuzzled my head into his neck, and he started up the stairs.
We got to the top, and I was expecting him to put me down, but he didn't. Instead he carried me to my room, and layed me down.
"Thanks." I mumbled as I pulled the covers closer to my cold body. "No problem."
He started to walk away. "Where are you going?" I asked, and he turned around. "I'm going back down stairs to sleep on the couch, what does it look like I'm doing?" He tilted his head a little in confusion. "You don't have to sleep down there, that couch is older than you and I combined. You'll have back pain for a week. You can sleep here if you want.." I tried not to sound awkward, but it didn't really work. He chuckled at my words, and nodded his head. "Fine." He said, and walked over to the bed. I opened the covers, and scootched back a little so we could both fit. He placed his arm over my shoulder as I turned on my side to place my hand on his chest.
"Thanks for staying with me, and putting up with me."
"I'm not putting up with you, I'm just helping you, and trying to make sure you're safe." He kissed the top of my head, and rubbed my back. Our legs were a tangled mess, and I couldn't ask for anything more. I just hope I don't run into Drew and his gang again.
Sadly, I was wrong.
